I get alot of blue smoke during warm up, it's like a switch at about 3500 under low to medium throttle. it's usually when the idle is still at 2k, and the smoke stops after a mile or so. Is this just cold start enrichment or should I worry.

pengaru 02-26-2003 05:17 PM

blue smoke is oil not fuel.... your oil control rings are probably going out and leaking oil when it sits.

jdub4000 02-26-2003 08:01 PM

Ya thats kinda what i though, but I like to live in denial, sounds like a teardown to me, any thing I can do

to prolong there life? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png

Not really prolonging life, but a little heavier oil might help. Depending on your climate of course and what weight your running presently.

I really wouldn't worry about it too much if it's only on cold starts. My engine is very strong and it does it (isn't right now but I think it may have something to do with the colder weather). Mine was only a little smoke when you first fired it up though. Unless you're consuming an unreasonable amount of oil I wouldn't be concerned at all.

well, i have the same problem with my FD, according to john d........ my turbo's are goin, and spitting oil into the intercooler, and it sits there and accumulate........ now when you start the car it just burns that oil until you burn whatever is sittin there. then it stops

ROTARYROCKET7 02-27-2003 10:23 AM

i get a lil blue smoke when i start my car but after like a couple of second it goes away. my car passed emissions it was like way below the nyc state limits so i was mad happpy but hopefully by the end of this year non of that wil be true. i vant to straight pipe my 87 gxl and put some rb headers and rb cat back

jdub4000 02-27-2003 01:23 PM

I guess for the meantime I'll just consider it extra lubrication when it's cold, mine also passed emissions here in oregon, hey, do they use emission dynos any where else beside here.

yeah if it's a turbo the oil seals of the turbo can be leaking also, but most fc's are na, and it's common for the oil control rings to be leaking by now.

They started using them here in Seattle again too. I don't know where the $ came from, but they've got quite the fancy system now.

Hey guys, sorry to butt in, but I've got the same problem, only waaaaaaay worse. It's at the point I'm adding a quart pretty much every 2 or 3 days, and the smoke is pretty thick the first 3-4 minutes if I bring the revs up anywhere past about 2500. Anybody wanna justify my desire to buy another vehicle and send the engine and turbo off for a rebuild?
