Well my car smokes quite a bit, only when it's warming up. Pours smoke everywhere, if I bring the idle up to around 3k it stops smoking. I'm thinking turbo seals.

Thanks

if it only smokes on warm up id tend to suspect the engine. is there oil on the spark plugs?

FikseRxSeven 08-28-2005 12:40 PM

could also be the turbo though... only because at startup with the oil cooler thermostat closed, fuel pressure tend to skyrocket, and if you have weak seals on the turbos(or the engine also) your car will smoke a lot...

i agree with the previous post though, about the sparkplugs, easy enough to check

Most likely the Oil Control Rings.

i meant oil pressure .... not fuel pressure https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

im hesitant to say oil control rings because, i had the same problem with my FD (assuming its the same problem) and before and after rebuild it was the same thing, and after another rebuild it was the same. smoke would come out of the exhaust the first 5-10 mins then it would slowly go away as the oil pressure goes down, so thats 2 sets of new oil control rings

nismo convert 08-28-2005 04:28 PM

It's not on warn up, well it could be because I have to hold the idle at like 2500 to get it to run, damn tb mod. Also it's fine till I start to sit in traffic, then it smokes, I'll check the plugs after I let it cool down some.

FikseRxSeven 08-28-2005 04:55 PM

i'd believe j9fd3s before i'd believe me though... so keep that in mind.. lol

nismo convert 08-28-2005 05:15 PM

Well here are the pic, the intake side is clean, and dry no oil, so I think that would rule out the turbo.... maybe i'm running too much premix? I donno, i'm using a 10:1 ratio.

The plugs are basically bone dry.

FikseRxSeven 08-28-2005 05:48 PM

doesnt rule out turbo.. remember you got 2 sides to the turbo https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

nismo convert 08-28-2005 05:52 PM

I was also thinking that, thought I typed rules out the intake side of the turbo.

R.P.M. 08-28-2005 05:56 PM

Yeah, if it was the turbo that is bad, it would be leaking oil straight into the exhaust on the hotside. The oil would never even get into the combustion chamber.

It is possible for oil to go out the compressor side and through the intake, but it doesn't look like it.

Oh and why dosen't your car idle? Mine idles at a perfect 750rpm and I have no emissions and ported throttle body.

nismo convert 08-28-2005 05:59 PM

You've seen my car, if it's cold it won't idle at start up, the Rtek ECU revoves the AEW. (Accel. Engine Warmup). Just a PITA, i'll start looking for the Vac leaks sometime, mostly too lazy.

R.P.M. 08-28-2005 06:31 PM

Probably not vacume leaks, your idle adjust isn't set right.

Remind me next time I'm near your car, I'll take a look at it.

Dude I dunno what units your using but the generaly accept ratio is somewhere between 128-256:1 or 1oz:1-2gal

nismo convert 08-28-2005 08:05 PM

Metric

10ml-1liter

ColinRX7 08-28-2005 10:50 PM

That's a juicy amount of premix

I was using 250-300 mL per fill up

nismo convert 08-28-2005 10:59 PM

I'm using 500 usually fill up around 1/4 tank. Maybe I'll cut back and find out....

ColinRX7 08-28-2005 11:12 PM

I forget but I calculated that I was suppost to be using 250 mL per 40L fill up or something to get a slightly above ratio than whats the norm

Cause it's always better to be safe than sorry

But even though I leaned of the side of error by going 250, I still couldn't really tell if I actually got 250 out of the bottle so I'd just pour roughly 300

Long story short I considered myself to be using too much premix.. But at least it was safe

nismo convert 08-28-2005 11:49 PM

I really don't think this is the cause of the smoking tho, so it's bigger turbo, or rebuilt time this winter, now I need abeater.

R.P.M. 08-29-2005 12:25 AM

Yeah Yeah!!!! Bigger turbo and rebuild....oh and porting too!!

Do it right the first time!!

i love how everyone blames a crappy idle on the "tb mod" after they do it.

my car idled perfectly with the tb mod and a whole bunch of other **** done.

take the blame yourself, you screwed the idle, not the tb mod. geebus.

TOo much premix won't cause smoke. I run 30:1 in my lawnmower and it doesn't smoke.

DId you overfill your motor oil in your last oil change?

nismo convert 08-29-2005 01:21 PM

I just did an oil change last Sat. put 4 liters in, thats it.

Teknics, when

'I did the porting ant TB I had it done then I had to get my car going in a hurry, as it quickly became my dailydriver. So I didn't have time to monkey around with the idle, I'll fix it some just don't know then, I know it's possable, just no time right now.

I already said that, it's obviously something seal related.

You can't tell me it won't cause smoke at all... Really now..

I'd check the tps.
