So I finally got around to putting my motor together, I'm still short 2 tension bolts that are in-transit right now... There are a bunch of pics from rotor assembly to essentially a finished short block:

my wife managed to catch me on camera... now you all know what I look like, https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/moon.gif

Were the corner seal springs visible in any of the pics? I think I may have forgotten to take a pic of those. Clearancing those side seals is a pain in the ass, I eventually ended up using 220 grit til they fit and 600 grit for the finish, seemed to work ok but damn my fingers got torn up.

you can see the bag in the back, nf01-11-c24

i use a dremel to do the side seals, its round and it does most of the work for you

Cool, looks good.

After watching the RE-amiya video vosko has and seeing that guy go through side seals on the small bench grinder... I decided against using a power tool for that step https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png Next time I'll buy some extra side seals so I can try the dremel...

j9fd3s 10-30-2002 05:08 PM

the dremel works great, with a not new stone it works pretty slow.

i put the dremel in a vice, and i had something to keep the seal square

pimp ****!!

pengaru 12-04-2002 09:07 PM

just an update, some new pics:

long block assembly pics

everything but the water pump / housing and oil pan etc have been put on as of now, you can also see the added material on the S4 LIM to block the intermediate housing heat riser port... I should be finishing up this weekend hopefully.

Those water nipples on the rear housing and water pump housing have been pulled, holes tapped, and plugged... since I removed the thermowax and the coolant from the BACV.

vosko 12-04-2002 09:11 PM

looks awesome. congrats!

j9fd3s 12-04-2002 09:14 PM

cool, ill be at that stage next week

pengaru 12-04-2002 09:53 PM

Your Intermediate Ports look bigger, Ported?

Just curious as to what it cost you? And what you replaced?

foopy 12-05-2002 05:08 AM

sorry for the fng question but:

wuts the distinction between short block and long block?

short block is just the keg, no manifolds, accessories, nothing on it. A longblock is the whole engine, with all manifolds, accessories etc.

So, when in the car, there's no distinction between short and long block, am I right? Just a matter of what you're dealing with outside the car, right?

yes it a term used when the engine is outside the car, because its always a longblock when installed and running.

j9fd3s 12-05-2002 10:59 AM

its kind of a piston engine term. a shortblock piston engine is just the bock, pistons and rods.

a long block is the short block with the cylinder head (s)

mike

Baldy 12-05-2002 11:29 AM

so what's the difference between big block and small block?

pengaru 12-05-2002 12:38 PM

thats just a piston motor term, big vs small, referring to two significantly different gm v8 blocks. (afaik)

short vs long is just what level of assembly they are at, i have the habit of calling an assembled 13b with no accessories (just housings assembled w/rotors inside) a short block .. i've seen others use it this way too with rotaries, makes sense to me. Since I've moved on to the oil pump, front cover, and now water pump, housing, oil pan, intake manifold etc it's approaching the long block level.. (in my vocabulary anyways, someone smack me if i'm way off on this)

Dac:

The housings are all street ported, via mazdatrix, intake and exhaust.

End housings are S5 NA 6 port housings

Intermediate and rotor housings are S5 Turbo housings

all are new and ported.

For pricing info check out mazdatrix' site, I don't wanna talk about it

Just for completeness, inside are two new S5 NA rotors, hardened stationary gears, FD corner seal springs, all new 3 piece 2mm apex seals (oem) and all other seals are new oem.

the bill was pretty big.

banzaitoyota 12-05-2002 12:45 PM

yep, BIIIIG BILL!!!!!!! :bigthumg: Looks Good, We'll have to run my Pineapple against yours someday!

j9fd3s 12-05-2002 12:56 PM

wow, you bought all that new? thats not cheap, i know https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

should be a really tight motor though

mike

pengaru 12-05-2002 01:13 PM

banzai, sure https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png unless you wanna race, then it's gonna have to wait til i get one of those miata transmissions too, heh heh

I've been contemplating the possibility of turboing this motor later on, but the more I read and watch, the more it seems NA is more useful on a road course, which is what I want to get into... road racing

maybe we can have a nopistons meet there sometime next summer :bigok:

j9fd3s 12-05-2002 02:28 PM

pengaru 12-05-2002 05:10 PM
