how hard is it to change my apex seals on my 87 turbo 2

ILUVMY88CABRIO 06-16-2002 02:34 PM

Well you have got to pull your engine, and then pull it all apart. I don't think the changing of the apex seals is that big o a deal, it's just all of the work that you've got to do to get to the seals that would be a bitch.

Why do you want to change them?

adam's87t2 06-16-2002 02:48 PM

because mine are bad thats the way i got the car what should i do?

ILUVMY88CABRIO 06-16-2002 02:51 PM

Did you do compression test to make sure it is your apex seals?

What exactly is wrong with the car? Are the seals broken? If yes then there will probably be more damage than just the seals.

adam's87t2 06-16-2002 03:34 PM

i dont know that much about the motor i got the car from a guy and he said the apex where bad its a 87 turbo 2 it drives ok but i am really ez on it

ILUVMY88CABRIO 06-16-2002 03:52 PM

Check your compression, it could be fine. It could just be a simple fix. Replacing your apex seals will meen that you'll pretty much have to rebuild the engine at a cost of $300-$800 just for the parts. Another way to check is to pull your leading spark plug (lower spark plug) from the front rotor housing, turn the engine over by hand, and listen for 3 wooshes of air per revolution, then do the same to the rear rotor housing. If you don't hear it 3 times for every complete revolution then you have a bad apex seal. And like 13BAce said, breaking an apex seal normally causes damage to other part of the engine like the rotor housings, the rotors, and the turbo.

adam's87t2 06-16-2002 03:53 PM

ok i will do that and let you guys know do you know any where i can get a rebilt motor thats bine ported for a good price

adam's87t2 06-16-2002 03:56 PM

bye the way how and what do i have to do to run mid to lox 12s and how much nos can i use on the motor

ILUVMY88CABRIO 06-16-2002 04:02 PM

It's a turbo, you won't need nitrus to run 12s. All you really need to do is upgrade your fuel system (better pump, larger secondairy injectors, and a way to control the fuel delivery), full exhaust, intake, turbo, and boost controller.

Mazdatrix sells engines from stock to full race engines.

adam's87t2 06-16-2002 04:06 PM

well i dont want to upgrade my turbo i have a down mid and cat back under my bed for it and it has a big ass k&n on it with a cold air intake what do you think of apex stuff all i want is a good mid 12 and be able to drive it to work

ILUVMY88CABRIO 06-16-2002 04:15 PM

The first thing you want to do is make sure you can get enugh fuel with the extra boost. If not, you can kiss your engine good bye. You might be able to run 12s with the stock turbo, but you would be pushing the turbo pretty hard.

adam's87t2 06-16-2002 04:30 PM

what do i have to do to get fuel

i need step bye step i dont know alot about the rotory motor

adam's87t2 06-16-2002 04:34 PM

if i did want to upgrade the turbo what should i get

If an apex seal were broken the car would run like an old Volkswagen.

YucA 06-16-2002 05:10 PM

yea get compression test. it could be something else, like a water seal or something even more stoopid..=)

Truthfully speaking, if you wanna run 12's, you are NOT going to be able to have the car as a reliable daily driver. its gonna be High ass and expensive maintenance. Just the truth. it will run good and crap, but thats just how the rotary is...

A car capable of 12's can be used as a daily driver as long as it's done properly.

Ported motor, full exhaust, upgraded fuel system, upgraded turbo, front mount intercooler, upgraded computer, etc. Search through the forums to get some tips.

adam's87t2 06-16-2002 07:19 PM

what kind of turbo and ic and stuff

vosko 06-16-2002 07:45 PM

my car ran 13.7 @ 100 with 3" rb dp, custom 3" mp, panspeed ecu, 3" ito spec TID, cone filter, 7psi of boost, garret turbo upgrade, act six puck race clutch, 17lb flywheel, stock catback, stock 150k mile low compression engine. i'm gonna be running jspec with stock turbo @ 15psi and NPR fmic. high 12's should be in order

winger 06-17-2002 06:48 AM

sorry just had to do it https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

I drove my car approximately one mile with a blown apex seal on the rear rotor. I had to scale a couple of small hills and I almost didn't make it. Just to move it around I had to rev it up to at least 6 grand to produce enough power. If an Apex seal is bad I doubt the car would do over 40 mph on a completely flat surface.

I had a motor blow a 2 years ago about 4 miles from my house on the highway. Getting home was kind of tricky. The car feels like it has no power, not matter how high you rev it.

adam's87t2 06-17-2002 01:35 PM

what is the ATF treatment how do i do it

My little darlin' gave me 70 miles an hour with 3 blown seals on the rear rotor for 30 miles. Then she gave another 12 miles at 45 mph up and down backroads (stop signs?---we don't need no stinkin stop signs!!!!!)Barely made it up the hills and then couldn't make it up the driveway. Damn the luck

Ferget about tryin to start it again. Oh well I wanted a new ported engine anyhoo and she deserves it for gettin me home!!!!!

The moral is that blowing an apex seal is sort of like having an orgasm......If you've had one, you just know it!!!! :bigok: https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif
