ive been thinking about making a plexiglass hatch for the black car. The frame would be made of carbon fiber, with a plexiglass window. Very light, and still utilizing the stock hinges and latches. Probably be about 400-500 bucks depending on how much the parts are.

Nice hat..
maybe, depends on how nice it turns out and how light it is.
I would recommend Lexan instead of Plexiglass
mazdacomp already has something like that

Yeah lexan won't shatter.. How much does the stock hatch weight I bet you would save more than 50% on the weight..

yea that sounds good. depends how it looks, i'd get it for aesthetics. pics when you can plz.
so are there any downsides? That would save a lot of weight, that hatch is heavy.
How's this for interest....how much and where do I send the check?
I've been wanting to find/have one made for awhile...if you could get one done, I would be willing to help in manufacturing more. |
well, im definetely making at LEAST one. (For me!) But i will have a mold, so i can make as many as people want. Ill snap some pics of the progress.

How did your hood turn out?
Yeah then he can work on my REPU hood..
You should consider Lucite, or for added strength Lucite Tuff. The problem with Lexan is that it will turn yellow wherever it is scratched(on the outside). Lucite does not require a coating to keep from yellowing, and Lucite tuff is nearly as strong as Lexan. I dont know if it's easier to mold or not, but I wonder if the Lucite pieces(commercially molded) are coated before or after molding, and how the uv coating on the lexan will hold up to heating and bending. Just some thoughts, Good luck, Carl

Hope it turns out nice. :bigthumg:

i posted sumthing about the same subject a while back, glad to see some1
out there thinks along the same lines as me...it has to weigh at least 200-300 pounds, that's a **** load of glass, I'm with In2Twins, Lucite doesn't yellow as bad and is nearly as strong...keep us posted https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png Sean |
I would love to have TWO, but I'm just another dreamer around https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/violin.gif
On any case, how about some sun roof panels made out of CF? There are a lot of FC with rusted sun roof panels, a CF one will probably be lighter or about the same weight BUT it will never rust https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png How does that sound? |

They aren't that heavy I can weigh one this weekend
whats mazdacomp's website? and doesn't re-a already have this. the sunroof idea seems to be a good one.

I'd be interested if it was a direct replacement for stock.
i saw something like this in rx-7store.net under c west aero
Yes.....this is what you are talking about?
This is the Authentic C-West rear deck lid. This deck lid weighs an incredible 24lbs and is constructed of Acrylic Glass. This kit is a must have for the RX-7 enthusiast who wish to redeuce weight. |
HPI makes one also, and side windows as well
Would the window have defrosters? It would suck not to be able to reverse out of the driveway.
umm, I'm pretty sure they don't expect this to be on a street driven car, so I'm going to say, No....I would assume that this is made for "track only" cars...don't really need defrost or a wiper for going around a track all day.
