Has anybody experienced trouble with their alt belts breaking? I'm on my third one since May. The first on lasted until about the beginning of Dec, the second until last week. They seem to be baked. I'm using Dayco Top Cog, which I've always thought to be a good brand. I replaced all four belts in May when I first got the car, and all the rest seem to be holding up just fine. Altenator seems to turn free, and the belt look to be running straight and true. Any help will be greatly appreciated. 90 Turbo II, btw. Thanks https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

i'd guess maybe overtighening it or something wrong with your alternator pulley. get the dual belt pulley lol

leave just a hint of slack, and clean the tracks on the pulleys. I hope your putting them in with the right side facing down. backwards they will go out real quickly.

Do you have your air pump on or off?

don90turboII 02-03-2003 11:43 AM

Thanks for the replies. Air pump is still on. I'm thinking maybe it streched, and then started slipping. I'll check the tension after a week or so of driving. I don't drive it everyday, but 2 to 3 times a week.

OOOH! I know! Make sure that the alternator is on right. When the previous owner of my car put the alternator on my car, he put the spacer in the wrong place. What i mean by spacer is the mounting (pivot) bolt. If you take off your alternator you'll know what I mean.

Anyway, the P/o put the spacer infront of the alt and I was breaking belts bi-monthly.

My car came with a new alternator and they didnt reinstall the spacer so far its cuased no problems but id say it could. Might wanna check and make sure its there.

Maybe spacer is the wrong choice of words. Maybe I'll take a pic.

Check to make sure that all of your pulleys line up perfectly. My friend's power steering belt blew because his pulley wasn't on quite far enough. Barely noticeable, but the extra tension on one side of the belt tends to screw it up. Just my $.02.

The altenator appears to be on right. I don't see a spacer though. I checked it last night, and the tension seems to be good still. Any pics would be helpful.

i'm not 100% sure but i dont think the 89+ have the spacer.
