Ok I'm hearing about a alt upgrade I can do... I read phinsup write up but it seemed to jump around alittle bit and threw me off abit. So if somone could point me to right direction it would be great!!! I wired up a electric fan from a 97 v8 thunderbird with a relay and t-stat and the car bogs down when the fan kicks on. Is this because of the crappy alts the the 88 s4 have or somthing else please help....

The alt may have something to do with it but so does the way you wired your fan.

The ECU normally deals with increased alternator load (AC, brake lights, etc.) by using the BAC valve to increase idle but since your fan isn't tied into the system, the ECU doesn't know the increased draw is happening and can't compensate.

Depending on the accessories your car has- AC or power steering- it's relatively easy to fix this.

A higher output alt is a good idea regardless.
