Almost got everything off to pull the block out.

Just go through the things I have taken off:

Alternator

Exhaust

Oil Cooler Lines

Lower rad. hoses

Air intake box

Have not unbolted the tranny yet. Leaving that for last, and for when I have some help.

Anything else I should be taking off while it is in the engine bay? I am not worried about the TB, water pump, or the fan right now. I think if I do take off the TB, I can access it easier.

Let me know what you guys think.

2 fuel lines below the master cylinder, the feed and return lines. Also remove the wires from the ECU and feed them up through the fender.

rowtareh 06-29-2004 09:57 AM

D'oh. Forgot I still have to do the fuel lines. They run up under the brake master cylinder?

ECU I will wait on until I haul the engine out.

Thanks.

Thanks.

You can't pull the engine with the wiring harness still plugged into the ECU. Unless of course, you unplug all the electrical connections on the block, which is not the way I would do it. TheCamel is saying to unplug the harness at the ECU, feed the plugs through the rubber grommet on the firewall and then pull the engine.

rowtareh 06-29-2004 10:31 AM

Oh. Ok, that is easy then. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png Thanks

rowtareh 06-29-2004 05:01 PM

Haha. I need a new exhaust. This thing is shot, and nasty, and so restrictive. What is the diamater of the exhaust pipes on the S4's? So small. 16 year old exhaust system is nasty. In the market to buy a new one I hope. After the rebuild. Hah.

Thanks

Justin

Shane.Trammell 06-29-2004 05:11 PM

the diameter is whatever the ruler says when you put it up to it

Smartass.

All that is to do the fuel lines. Woot. I am taking my sweet ass time on this too.

rowtareh 06-29-2004 06:58 PM

Oh. Never knew anybody wanted pictures.

Gimme some minutes to go take pictures of my empty engine bay and the icky exhaust.

one...

steps i took in doing this little bit of work

1.)unhooked the air intake box, and the air intake tube all the way up to the throttle body

2.)unhooked the battery, and the spark plug wires

3.)took out the fan shroud

4.)took off alternator

5.)unhooked oil cooler lines going into the block and let those drain out

6.)unbolted the exhaust. I did not unbolt it from the block because it is to hard to get to(is there a heat shield on the block from the exhaust ports?)

7.)unhooked the left lower radiator hose(be sure to have an oil pan under there to catch the coolant, or else you will have a mess to clean up)

All that I have left is the ECU, and fuel lines and tranny. Tranny will be the last thing to do. I have no clue where the ECU is exactly. I know where it is, but I don't know what wires they are. I have a picture of it I believe. Will post that.

89 Rag 06-29-2004 07:21 PM

it's under the kickplate on the passenger side..sooo unplug it already and rip that motor out! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Order them from aeroquip or earls, you will probably need some extra collets if you do them yourself, it takes a few tries to get them where the don't leak if you are an amature. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

89 Rag 06-29-2004 07:34 PM

You should unbolt the ac compressor and wire it up if you are going to keep it functional, otherwise you should rip it out too.

rowtareh 06-29-2004 07:37 PM

haha. my y-pipe has a face!

fuel lines? yes or no. i tried trailing them under the TB and through the manifold, and looks like they come up to the injectors. are these the fuel lines?

yes, mark where they are so you don't hook them up backwards after the install, lots of ppl do it save yourself the headache.

rowtareh 06-29-2004 07:47 PM

ECU. Is the ecu in that general region on the side? There is a shitload of wires going to two inputs. This the ECU. I have only seen an Apexi FC in person and that is all. LOL.

rowtareh 06-29-2004 07:50 PM

and last one. exhaust. as much as i bitch about this car, i am going to keep it. doing all this work is satisfying and knowing that i did the work myself is a plus.

I think I need to upgrade my exhaust when this rebuild is done. Now the rebuild I am getting help with, thank god!

I think I will keep a/c in there. How much weight would I lose if I took it out? And be alot of space I would save too? Easier access to plugs? And engine bay would look cleaner. **** it, it is coming out too.

rowtareh 06-30-2004 10:05 PM

Woot. Fuel lines are off. Took so long ripping them off there. Attempted to take off the throttle body, but I did not really get anywhere with it. On the front of the throttle body there is 3 inlets for lines. I guess there are vacuum lines, dunno. There was 2 rubber ones, and one made of cloth or something. Replace it? Sorry, no picture.

All that is left is the ECU, so many damn wires down there, and I have big hands, so it is being a pain in the ass.

'nother question? Was it easier to unbolt the tranny while the engine was in the car, or just haul it out with the tranny and engine together? Of course I would have to pull the driveshaft out. Which is easier? I can always unbolt the tranny when it is out, and inspect the clutch, flywheel, replace the starter if need be, and check out the pressure plate. I have only changed the clutch and PP in an FD with my neighbor. He had me ask something about them. The FD has a forward sprung clutch system or some ****. ****! I forget. I will ask later. Hopefully it will be out this weekend, and there will be tons and tons of pictures as I take off the throttle body, manifolds, and water pump. Hopefully this is helping somebody out other than me.

Woot, wish me luck.
