We have a good aftermarket antenna from the coupe (removed the radio completely) and the '90 vert needs an antenna. Radio signal cable pluggged in, ground grounded, now there's a red and blue wire from the antenna, and a 4 hole plug from the car. When they're plugged in as pictured, when the key is on, the antenna goes up. When the blue wire is unplugged, the antenna goes down. We can't make it do anything else. Any thoughts?

so what are you trying to get the antenna to do?

Baldy 05-22-2005 11:27 AM

Go up when car on, go down when car off. Or some variation thereof.

there should be a antenea signal wire on the radio , that is where the blue wire goes to. What kinda radio are you installing? I know Pioneer uses a blue wire for this signal..

It's the stock radio, just swapping the antenna.

I switched around the blue and red wires, and it'll go up when key is on, and go down when key is turned back, but if you turn it off completely the antenna stops where it is; the power wire is on only with the ignition.

Anyways, next problem is physical fitment. When bolted up, there's part of the aftermarket antenna that runs into the rain channels for the trunk, so the antenna exits the very side-most of the hole. So I think if I modify the antenna bracket, or get longer bolts to use to space the bottom of the antenna towards the fender, it should work.

Where did you buy the antenna?

Baldy 05-23-2005 10:34 AM

I think I got it from Best Buy a few years ago.

sounds like you might need the antennea base, there isnt one on the vert now?

Baldy 05-24-2005 08:18 AM

Where the bracket at the bottom of the antenna attaches to the car, I used 2 machine screws (couldn't find bolts that would work at home depot) to space the bracket away from the stock mounting position. I used nuts to keep the screws in their position, with one nut holding the screw tight to the antenna bracket, and a nut on each side of the mounting point, which allowed me to adjust the position of the base of the antenna towards or away from the mounting point. Still uses the same holes, but moved towards the fender more to clear the channels at the top.

Rob, what's this antenna base you speak of?

Rob x-7 05-24-2005 07:30 PM

stock is a black anodized base that has the correct angle on it

dont know if you can make it out or not

did you read the Mazdatrix page on replacing the mast?

only thing I dont like about thier page is they tell you to use a hammer and a pick to loosen the base, there is a specific and inexpensive tool for removing antennea bases.86-92 Antenna Mast Replacement
