ok how much for the vert? what size filter? also any pointers?
|
What oil are you planning on useing?
|
10-40 castrol....use purolator's filter for the car. Least restriction and half-decent filtration (just get the rocks out)
|
penn 10w 30
|
that's fine shane, i just prefer castrol for some reason https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif
|
umm ok, should i put some marvel in there?
|
put it in the spark plug holes turn the motor over a few times by hand...let it sit over night. Take off the cats and let it idle for a min the next morning with open exhaust. Nice happy clean motor guts now https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png
AKA the ATF trick |
umm how much oil?
|
oil is about $2 a quart
filter anywhere from $3.50 and up 5 quarts of oil is needed you probably already have a metric tool set, you will also need the right size oil filter wrench, a drain bucket, jack and stands, some rags, and a funnel. I personally pour the first quart carefully, then cut the bottom of that oil container open with a razor blade so I always have a nice clean funnel to use. Dont forget a container to pour the used oil in and bring it somewhere to be disposed of, dont dump in or throw it in the garbage, do the right thing. |
yea cutting the bottle and using it as a funnel is a good idea, no chance of getting **** from an old funnel into your car.
on my first oil change for my 7 i decided to go "high class" and get the purolator "pureone" filter "with micronic filtration"....i thinks it's overdoing it but it's nice and shiny ohhh ahhh. lol https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png kevin. |
The Pureone is one of the best out there. I don't think that's overkill. Overkill would be a K&N every 1500 miles or something.

at strauss auto they have cutaways of "leading brand" "purolator" and "PUREONE", basically pureone looks like it has 10x as many pleats/folds as the purolator, which itelf has 10 times the folds/pleats of "leading brand". which leaves the questions if purolator is so good, why is it's competitor the "leading" brand? hehe, i asked an employee that question and he was lost. kevin. |
Castrol 20-50.. but that's just me, i ALSO use a purolator "BLUE TIN" oil filter
When scott over at mazsport use to change my oil he'd use Castrol 20-50 and an OEM mazda filter. That's just as good -Markus "GOod luck, let us know" CHEERS! |
Go buy a magnetic drain plug. They run about $2.00 at autozone. Nice to have. A little extra help for the filter. Also, good way to moniter for trouble.

James if youre going to get a new drain plug go for the ones that dont need to be removed to change the oil, makes it super quick https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png kevin. |

Isn't it 6.1 quarts? The Haynes manual says 5, the owner's manual and FSM say 6.1 US quarts. Just changed it for the first time on my '88 vert and added 6 quarts.
My old '79 took 5 1/2 quarts. Filter is easy to change being on the top just poke a hole in it as it drains and put a rag underneath as Rob stated. I like to turn the left wheel to the right, can get to the plug without jacking up car. It's a 19MM socket. |
its 5 quarts, I dont know where you got the extra oil to go?
|
Is the FSM and owner's manual wrong? I was a little suspicous when I saw the Haynes said 5. I changed the filter also of course if that adds to the capacity.
If it's 5 I guess I now have an extra quart in there, should I drain it? |
The owners manuel says to put more oil in the car than is needed. Thats why you check it every time you pour a quart in.

to the little drip's room. kevin. |
I only used Castrol 20W-50 in my TII, and I used the Napa filter.
|
Never heard of a FC taking more then 5 quarts, so I would say the FSM is wrong or they arent US quarts
or your reading it wrong. |
I thought I read 5.5 with filter but I always put in a 5 quart jug and its just enough.
|
The filter doesn't take up any oil unless the car is running.
|
That makes sense
|
Guess I better drain a quart then, or should I just drive real hard to burn it? Just joking!
FSM and owners manual does say 6.1 US quarts. Never had the oil cooler issue with my first gen-manual said 5.5 quarts and that would bring it right to f. |

FSM and owners manual does say 6.1 US quarts. Never had the oil cooler issue with my first gen-manual said 5.5 quarts and that would bring it right to f. here's what the FSM says, verbatim. Total (Dry Engine): 5.8 (6.1, 5.1) Oil Pan: 4.4 (4.7, 3.9) Oil Cooler: .85 (.90, .75) Oil Filters: Factory Installed .19 (.20, .17) Service Parts: .17 (.18, .15) so since i doubt you drain every last bit of oil from your engine every time you change it your slowly but surely adding way too much to the system. The reason why 5 quarts is suggested is because when you drain the oil you're mainly draining the oil pan, filter, and then a little extra from other places, your not emptying out the entire engine of oil, some oil will always remain in the block. So you add the Pan and filter (figure 4.6 altogether) and then since some extra oil will come from the lines to the cooler or other places you just round up to 5 quarts. By repeatedly putting 6.1 quarts in your slowly building it up, 6.1 when built, drain oil and put another 6.1 in and realistically in the engine is probably 6.4 or so, and so on and so on. the only time i would ever put 6.1 is into a brand new rebuilt completely oil free engine. kevin. |
just put the 5 qts in, let the car warm up, shut it off, and you will see the oil is full.

i use kendall 20w-50 in my turbo 2 with a pure one filter i used to use mazda filters but got tired of ordering them then i was using mobil 1 filters but go tired of paying 12 bux for a filter
|
Damn, I'll definitely drain out a quart then. I just check the dipstick its completely covers the indented portion over the F mark. That's got to be at least 1/2 a quart over.
Thanks |
