ok so with my sr240 totaled i got a nice 90 gtu, ok long story short it has a hard time cranking up takes about 4 or 5 good turns with gas depressed to crank over, when it does crank it runs smooth with minimal smoke, it idles rather high at 1300 rpm on top of that, im going to check into the tps and see if i can lower it a tad. ive heard that when theres cranking issues like mine that they engine may be on the way out ?
im somewhat familiar with early 13b's having owned a gsl-se but this s5 seems foriegn compared. |
well bud, when mine started having cold cranking issues it was because compression was making its way into the water jacket (all started when the alternator went out). but dont count yours out yet! you oughta start by checking the basics: vacuume leaks, compression, fuel delivery, and spark, (theres some good writeups on cheap ways to check all of these effectively) let us know what you find out. the TPS isnt a bad idea, but I dont think it would create hard starting conditions (atleast not like the one you describe) either way, make sure to have plenty of beer handy.*
-Hill *note: I didnt have beer durring my ol ladys honda crx-to-civicD15 swap and havnt seen my 10mm craftsman combination wrench since. (ok, so I threw the darn thing, but you have been warned) |
Yeah buddy, had the same problem, except mine had lots of white smoke coming out the tail pipes, it was so much smoke that i couldnt see my car. now it is a matter of rebuilding the motor, 1000 + dollars later. that was after i did like 130 mph on the interstate. so good luck with your 90 gtu cuz my 90 gtu is getting a rebuild.
|
the thing is, mine doesnt smoke and only smoked when that neck broke.
i found out that its been sitting for around 2 months without being cranked as well. |
maybe a low or wrong battery with weak cold cranking amps
|
start with the basics. double check timing, set the tps, check/replace the plugs, change fuel filter, check for vac leaks bla bla bla.
could just be leaky injectors too. my 88 n/a has a cold cranking problem due to a bad ECT sensor, im just lazy and wont replace it lol. oh and battery too. kevin. |
When I purchased my T2 it did something similar.. It was just kind of hard to start. I bought a new batt, changed oil, installed new plugs/wires and put in new injectors. I have never had a problem with it since.. Altho I rarely drive it.
It had been sitting for a while when I got it as well. |
alot of it settled out, plug were fouled, fuel filter clogged and the idle issue is gone, stays at a smooth and even 900. just gotta fix that coolant level buzzer, its driving me crazy

still does it and i keep that ho full.
i dont know where all my coolant is going, radiator is full, coolant reserve full... no leaks on the ground and it doesnt smoke, yet ive gotta put collant in it ever 3 or 4 days! what the crap is going on? it still beeps like crazy! |
hmm, has it been running hot at all?
the only place i can think the coolant would be going is steaming out the overflow, but thats highly unlikely. |
runs at a consitant 85 according to my greddy gauge, however it was running at 110 today.

new thermostat?
is the sensor in good condition, they tend to fall apart right where it meets the top of the sensor...been there. kevin. |
When you refill it, do you open the air bleed screw on the radiator?

yea if the sensor isnt falling apart its most likely good, dont think ive seen one go bad, its a real basic sensor lol.
congrats on not having a falling apart one BTW....every one ive run into is cracked right at the top of the sensor and ready to fall off. could just be air working its way around and around, might be a HUGE bubble, my 88 n/a just went through these problems lol (well without setting off the buzzer, just noticeably low when i checked it), and i do drain and fills on rads all day, i let that **** breathe for a LONG time and finally no more problemos. kevin. |
so how do i do this ?
|
ive never used that air bleed, mine stripped and broken off, but theres still enough in it to plug the hole
let it idle for a while with water filler necks cap off, keep filling it if the level goes down. but not so much that it gets hot and overflows and hits your exhaust manifold and steams. |
thanks for the help lee... btw ill be in cincinati either late august or early september, we should meet.... and have sexy times
