89 GTU only runs with AFM pushed in and fuel constantly on

First off the car is a 89 GTU NA and all stock

TL/DR at bottom

The following is car background and new or redone parts or systems: I bought the car 6 months ago and it had not run for over 15 years. Perfect shape and no rust anywhere. Had to redo the fuel lines, new fuel pump, redid the fuel tank, cleaned the intake system, new AFM, new fluids, new plugs, new plug leads, new gaskets everywhere, some electrical things to get the fuel pump running like removing the fuel pump resistor relay and new ignition switch and new circuit opening relay, new battery, new alternator.

The car started and then died instantly until I shorted the fuel test connector and pushed in the AFM. I have to do both of these things for the engine to stay running. The engine revs depend on how much the AFM is pushed in and the revs heavily pulsate (500-1000 rpm pulses at any rev range). Lower revs there is a lot of white smoke that is not present past 4k rpm ish. The gas pedal is responsive and allows me to go through the whole rev range as well.

i am thinking it is a fuel pressure issue as I have an inline fuel pressure gauge that reads approx. 45 psi at this somewhat idle. Not sure if that is high or normal but i have not replaced or fixed the fuel pressure regulator. I also have not replaced the ECU or tps or done a rebuild or anything like that. Only the AFM. Checked for vac leaks and all that. Any thoughts on where I should go from here? Any input will help thanks!!<3

TL/DR
car won’t start unless the AFM and the fuel test connector is shorted and there is lots of smoke at low rev range and a pulsing in the revs. Checked for vac leaks, AFM problems. Not sure if it is ecu, fuel systems or electrical.
