Hey guys, newbie here. I gotta 88 Rx all stock. I blew my engine and just threw in an 89 13b. There was alot of things diferent. So I took off the FI, air conditionin, power steerin etc. Just using my stock stuff. I ran into a problem tho. the oil metering pump for the 89 engine is electronic, my 88 was with the rod so now theres nowhere to plug the cables into what can I do about this problem? Is there someway I can still use the electric one?any info would be appreciated. Also some1 told me if I take out the power steering Im goin to break somethin with the steerin components. Is this true, cause I hate power steering for the highway.Thanx.

I do believe you need an s5 (89-91) ECU for the s5 engine. A lot of the sensors have different resistances that won't work with the s4 (86-88) ECU. If you get the s5 ECU than you won't have to worry about getting the mechanical pump.

The power steering should give you no trouble at all. Just make sure there is enough fluid in it to lubricate it and loop the two hoses where the pump was originally attached. I know that some RX-7s have variable power steerin which turns the power steering on and off depending on your speed. It could be all or some not sure. My old GXL had it, I could feel it especially when I'd pull into my driveway fast and all of a sudden I needed a lot less force to keep turning in the turn as I slowed down.

Is the ECU the computer or the wiring harness? I have the s5 wiring harness but it wont connect to the rest of my car. and the engine looks pretty much the same I took off everything from it except that damn metering pump. I would've tryed to put the rod in there but that thing got all bent up from the old engine droppin on it, and I didnt notice the diference till after I threw it in there. Is there another way I can use this pump?Or maybe I can buy the rod and connect it to the throttle again. And I guess removing the pump isnt gonna make anything work harder besides me?.... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif

you need to put the s4 front cover and mop on, or premix

s4 front cover and mop on? what exactyl does this mean? switch back to the manual metering pump? and If I have no choice but to change the damn computer and wiring harness what exactly do i do when premixin? ( ratio of gas-oil, kind of oil, and do I take off the oil lines on the engine or leave em)thanx

your best bet would be pickup the S5 ecu and harness... thats probably the easiest solution.

swapping the front cover is kindof a pain, but not difficult, more tedious than anything.

if you decide to premix you can remove the MOP (metering oil pump) and install a blockoff plate, then plug the oil injector holes with bolts or have them filled another way, welding works.

you can also leave the MOP on but disconnected and just premix.

I have no problem permixing. I've done it for years on my dirtbike. The ECU is the computer.

if you put in an s5 ECU then you have to rewire the dash.

Swapping in the 89 engine wasn't the smartest move you could've made, there are way too many little differences to make it run without a lot of work. I think the easiest way to go is sell the engine and buy an s4 engine.

pengaru 04-16-2003 05:36 PM

the S5 engine is better, it's a great choice, and if the price was right an even better one.

personally I'd just remove the MOP and run premix.

if you have the S5 intake on the engine you will have to figure something out for the VDI control.
