Current: Starts, and idles really rough. Accelerates very poorly and tops out around 45 mph.

In shop. Mechanic has checked fuel and spark and hasn't come up with problem.

History: I also have a ragged out 86 gxl that needed a clutch but ran like a champ. so i swapped engines. same problem. it seems to only run on half the engine. first i replaced the engine harness/loom and problem remained unchanged. Then i swapped computers, and problem remains unchanged.

Thoughts: It's obviously a problem only with the 88 since the 86 ran great before the swap. so what else is there that could either interfer with the power or suck power?

compression?

you have a busted apex seal... time for a rebuild, also the 88 engine ran off high impedence 460cc injectors rather than the low impedence 460's.

Ahhh no.

Sounds to me like you have a clogged cat. Take it to an exhaust shop and get it cut out, or get it replaced if you have to.

Do a compression test, then report back.

i accidently took out the part of my reply, i meant to take out the statement about the injectors.

the engine was just swapped, and ran great up to the last time i started it just a few hours before pulling it, so compressions not it.

injectors are good since they're the same ones that were in it before the swap... the only difference is the car/body.

I've also heard suggestions of a clogged catalytic converter or bad ignition module.

I know for sure that the problem IS NOT on or in the engine. the problem can only be somewhere else.

still stumped, but i think i'm about ready to bring it home from the shop cause i can do as good. lol

are the injectors different or are they run different from the ecu? meaning... since the engine in the 88 is from an 86 can i use 86 injectors or do i need 88?

if it is the injectors that means the injectors in the 88 engine (sitting next to the 86) are for an 86 too because i did the swap in the first place to solve this problem...yet the problem persists...

remember the 86 engine i'm trying to run, ran great in the 86 body and only acted like this (half power) after putting it in the 88 body
