I have a 1988 GTU mint condition with blown seals in the rear rotor. Can I do a tII swap for under $3,000.00US. The tranny in the car has about 800 miles on it ;/ Will it hold up turbo II power? Also will the stock GTU rear end hold up aswell? Will the tII motor just drop in and the tranny bolt up and use same drive shaft or is a stubby needed? or what not Any info would be great if I wasnt so damn tired I would do a search thank you all in advance.

The NA to T2 conversion is the same really for a GTU as it is for any other model(except t2 of course)
Your NA tranny will bolt up..will it hold up to the power? ...for a while... If you keep your NA driveline..doing it for 3K can be done, its not a task to be completed by the impatient or new mechanic... 1Revvin7 did just what ur asking GTU to T2..but he did the entire driveline, etc.. I went from an '88 SE to a '91 T2..big pain in the ass.. If you do decide to do the swap..stay in the same series, you have a series4 car, go w/ a series4 T2('87-'88)...you'll need the engine, harness and ecu for starters... |
There was a thread we had a while back...ignore my original link..but scroll down through the thread, u'll find some usefull info

With 3k you could definately do it and have enough to do a drivetrain swap..

T And yea..if u have an s5...get an s5 engine, etc. The interior harnesses that plug into the ECU are dif between s5 and s4..if you get an s4 engine and ecu..you will have to swap your entire interior harness which is def not what you want to do..trust me, i did it,lol...standalone is best..but pricey. |
Here is my writeup for t2 swaps. I don't have any parts available right now, but this outlines everything you need to know on the swap itself. Good luck.
