My first post ever.

Hello. I have always been a fan of Mazdas, particularly the RX7, and I am looking at one on E-bay right now (1987). I do not know how much it will be if I win it, but its 600 bucks right now with 6 days left.

It says it has a bad apex seal. Apparently a common problem. What is an apex seal and more importantly, how hard is it to fix? I understand it is an internal component, and I do have some engine rebuild experience. I got to Ohio Technical College and have access to any tool I would ever need.

I need your opinions.

the engine will need an overhaul, it's hard to say what exactly will need to be replaced. If it's just one apex seal, at least a rotor housing is damaged, the rotor may also be damaged, and if it's a turbo model.. the exhaust wheel might have suffered from damage also.

Thats the URL. I don't know if the price will stay that low though. What kind of money am I looking at as far as a rebuild kit goes? Also, when those things get overhauled, is there any machining involved? The motors I have rebuilt (mostly cummins inline 6s) you pretty much replace everything. Unless you bend a rod that is. Then you get into oversized bearing shells and machining on the crank. I guess that won't be a problem here. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

the mazda engines are a little different, there is almost no machining you can do. you check clean and or replace as needed, except foe the seals and gaskets

Damn thats a clean looking GXL for that price.I say BUY IT.A motor isn't too bad considering the shape the car is in.

I'd say buy it, and do a rebuild. At most, you could buy a full rebuild kit for 900 dollars, and that'd put you at about 1500, which ain't bad at all, considering it'll have a rebuilt engine and nice body.
