This is BY FAR the weirdest problem I've EVER had with ANY car.... I bought another rx-7 cause my other one isn't streetable. I got it for 500 bucks from a friend, and it starts right up, and idles at a perfect 750. Doesn't overheat, doesn't leak, doesn't make any weird noises, nada. Perfecto. Well, one problem:
After about 5 minutes of PERFECT driving, the accelerator gets weird. It breaks down into two things: 1. It starts making a weird like clicking-and-hissing sound when you push on the gas, and it hesitates, and eventually bogs down....If you keep the gas pedal depressed, it'll die... 2. When you let of the gas after it starts doing this, the RPMs kick up a little, kinda like pushing it IN really fast, then letting off, but i'm just letting off....weird...... 3. Here's the even WEIRDER part: If you turn the car off, and start it back up in literally TWO seconds, it'll run PERFECT again for another 5 minutes!!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif When driving it to the shop, I had to kill my car 10 times on the freeway with the clutch in, starting it back into 5th gear, and it got there just fine!!! umm yucky injectors and old radiator caps?

I'm thinking there is an intake leak or a crack on the manifold and its not noticeable until the car warms up and the metal starts changing. Let it warm up again and spray some water or carb cleaner and spray it in the area of which I'm talking about... Sometimes those plastic intake pipes have cracks in them too

2. happens to me all the time, when the idle starts dropping, it's like the car automatically keeps it alive

Sounds like a fuel problem....in sequence, I would do the following:
from the injectors back.......check the fuel filter.....check the fuel pressure, it should be about 40 pounds, if that fails, check the pick up screen on the pump in the tank Run some injector cleaner through the tank Spray carb cleaner in the throttle body Clean everything as much as possible.......then check for vacuum leaks |

I put fuel injector cleaner in it to no avail Took it to 3 shops, and NONE can figure it out Looked for leaks, none apparent, I'm thinking it's a fuel or maybe computer problem.......can't be because it's warm because if you kill it for two seconds, it's not gonna cool down that fast...and it works perfectly again for five minutes after you kill the car for two seconds...I'm thinking maybe either a computer-related problem, or maybe timing, cause eventually a small gap in timing would become a HUGE timing gap the longer its run...Tell me if I'm an idiot or what...I've checked leaks, none apparent, No other problems, can't be because it's warm. I'll replace the injectors with the ones off of my other seven, which are brand (almost) new...I'll update this as soon as info becomes available. fuel filter? or the screen in the tank? (as someone mentioned earlier)
turn off, crud in gas settles. turn on, go flows fine, until crud gets stirred up. |
OK.......I'll add this one just to show that ANYTHING is possible......it happened on my S5 racer.....
Under no load, the car would rev to the redline with no problem......under load, it would die at 2000 RPM like it was out of fuel.......so I thrashed away.....when I checked the fuel pressure, it was way low, so I ordered a new pump and tofe it apart to replace it. When I got the pump out of the tank, I found that the rubber hose connecting the pump to the line had slipped off! I threw a tantrum for a bit, cancelled the new pump, checked the fuel pressure.....40 pounds! Anything can happen...........don't rule anything out. Be methodical and **** when checking. You won't regret it... |
You need to specify what year your car is. Did anyone work on it before the problem started?

1986 Rx-7 n/a GXL (13b of course) bone stock been sitting for around 8 mos. but started right up Had that problem but here's a good piece of NEW info: The car's dead. Won't start. Just keeps turning. I tried yanking the fuses under the hood to clear the flooding problem, it'd kick a lil, then go back to just turning. I think my fuel pump died, and I probably wasn't getting 40 pounds. I'm taking it to a friend tomorrow to have it checked out... Hopefully he'll have some ideas...Keep posting, and maybe it'll help him out. thank you all for your help, Joel |
Im gonna go with an electrical problem. Though what exactly, I dunno...
I dont think its a mechanical ( fuel pressure...vacuum leak...etc... ) because of the fact that it does it after ~5 minutes and if you turn the car off and turn it RIGHT back on, it doesnt do it. |
Your filter on the pump is probably clogged up. Whick caused your pump to overheat.

But that usually causes your car to stall around turns and stuff before it causes your car to stall/sputter all together...

Have you pressure tested the fuel system yet?
I would do the basics to the car. New air cleaner plugs wires and fuel filter. Then check the fuel pressure. Or if you can afford to drop in a new pump although the old one might be fine. Ground your engine better the stock ground sucks. Ground your fuse strip and your ECU. All these things need to be done anyway and are cheap to do. Thats where I would start. Also - I had the same problem a DaveB with the hose slipping off the fuel pump. It will take you abot 15 minutes to pull your pump and check it out. |

HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Could the 5 minute interval be like 7 minutes??? The ECU safety "limp" mode kicks in after 7 minutes or so. This would explain why the problem stops after turning the car off and back on... You are resetting the ECU. I know it does not diagnose the problem any better but at least it takes one of the variables out of the equation. Aside from that above... It definitely sounds like fuel delivery problems, namely the fuel pump. Which may have made your ECU act goofy. As the fuel pump was failing your ECU was prolly going into LIMP mode. |
I finally fixed my car YAY!!! Here's ALL that was wrong/had to be replaced:
Fuel Pump (wires twisted in gas tank) Fuel Filter (Broke off and was sitting at bottom of fuel tank) Fuel Rail w/ Fuel Pressure regulator (flooding the car at start-up w/ new filter Thermostat Radiator cap (bad pressure) Radiator (clogged) Electric fan in place of mechanical (fan clutch burned out) Water pump (was rusted through) Gauge cluster (a bunch of gauges weren't working, and I got sick of it) Master & slave cylinder (clutch kept goin' dry) Fuel cut-off installed so the car starts now Temperature switch assembly? (forget what it's called, it turns on at certain temp) the only thing i haven't fixed yet is that stupid ANNOYING BUZZER!!!!!! I JUST WANT TO MURDER IT, AND I DIDN'T WANT TO BREAK IT OUT OF THE GAUGE CLUSTER!!! It's driving me insane. It's just the Add Coolant sensor burned out, so it's not grounding, and BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!! I even tried grounding out the sensor, but no dice... Oh well, it'll burn out soon. HEY THANKS ALOT GUYS!!!!!!!!! lol im a 15 year old with a 17 year old car lol oh well. neway my car is doing the exact same thing as yours. i can take fuses out and and in it will try to start but when i try after that it just turns over my mufflers and **** off my racing exhaust are off so the exhaust makes this loud pooping noise every time it turns over. but thanks to you guys i know what the problem is. the only other thing i have to fix is the rear main its leaking . i lost half of my oil first day i refilled it. came out in the morning and it was on the the driveway running towards the road lol. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

I look out the office at my car during the day and look for an excuse to drive it somewhere. If I know I am Autocrossinf it the next weekend that week cannot go past fast enough and I hardly sleep the night before the race. Now I am dealing with what is possibly a screwed side seal ( courtesy of a couple of 30+ PSI boosts during a malfunction this past july - she hung in there to everyones amazement for 6 more months) and I will not be driving it for at least 3 weeks if not a month. I am depressed right now. |

I didn't say it was bad, just miss it. My FC is acting weird (again). Here's my NEW problem.
After about 5 minutes of driving, the temp. gauge says its' ON FIRE!!! I popped the hood after I pulled over, and it's not steaming. NO boiling, NO NOTHING. The only thing that's hot is the radiator hose. The radiator is ICE cold, and the engine is still warm to the touch. What gives? Should I drive it?
