Okay now that my car is running and everything is coming together nicely it's time to deal with the 6 ports.



Here's an idea I came up with and just wondered what you guys think.



I like the idea of electronic activation. My idea is to use a solenoid to PULL the ports open when triggered. I am going to use 35 lb. trunk soleniods to pop the 6 ports open at the RPM I need.



I'm going to cut the end of my 6 port diaphram open, weld the mounts for the soleniods and connect the linkage.

35 lbs may be overkill, but I could put a resistor inline to limit current and decrease the pull (also the load).

I'm going to yank mine, mine seem to be stuck open. It seems a little to expensive to me to go with elecrtonic activation, have u seen how much the activator cost? there was a good write up on it somewhere.....

What signal do you expect to use for triggering them? The purpose of this idea I could see, is to be able to remove the air pump, and use the signal for the 6PI solenoid valve to trigger your electric actuators instead. One thing is still to verify though, is this kind of actuator made for staying triggered for a long period at a time (at least 30 seconds) without over heating (Trunk is not long to get unlocked).

I think he expects to get a signal from a little device that reads rpms, I believe it would send a single signal @ the desired Rpm for opening and 1 for closing, But this little gadget is expensive.

Sure we can get actuators that do the job for less money, it is easy to rotate so we don't need all that strength. That kind of actuator usually can't handle a long duty cycle.

What gain do you think we can get by selecting other opening times instead of keeping the actual opening times? You'll say, it could be worth the try! ???

Well I have a Haltech (no Air Pump) so dialing in the RPM to triggle these will be easy. But yes they are overkill. Actually a pair of them are less than $80. A stepper motor would be perfect to turn the 6 ports (like a servo in the RC world) but the problem is the HEAT that is right there below them.



There are also RPM activated switches (about $50 through SummitRacing). but I won't need that.



It won't take 35 lbs to open the solenoids so I figure I could probably run them with a couple of resisters to drop the current down to a decent level and allow them to operate for longer periods of time. They do have to deal with the heat.

Yeah, your idea is not bad at all. The external heat is not a problem for electric actuators as self-heating is more harmful.

Working with stepper motor isn't needed anyway, just opened or closed, that's all it needs.

On my '86 (as 87' and 88'.) it's more difficult to do what I said earlier, it doesn't have 6PI solenoid valve. It's rather a combination of the split air valve, switching valve and exaust pressure. (complete mess... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub... as they didn't know where to connect it)
