Well,same thing again,tranny has gone out.I know the 86 tranny is a piece of **** but jesus,I can not keep these things togethor.The gears in these babys are some weak mothers.Its always the same thing,take off--then bamn!noise out the ass,reverse locks up and first does the same thing--have to shift to second very quik just to get it to keep rolling.

Is there any thing to beef up these units--?any ideas on an upgrade for these years?

why not just put a T2 tranny in it and be done? It will bolt up, and with the money you have already spent you could have bought one already...

I didnt know a t2 would bolt right up.If so--hell its done.Can I get some confermation on this---and is there a cut off year that will match up

It will fit, you will either need to install a T2 rear and driveshaft along with it, or have a custom driveshaft made.

Any year t2 drivetrain will bolt right in. You just need the corresponding series t2 crossmember and Y section for the tranny to bolt up.

Is your car heavily modded?



IMO, there is no need for a TII drivetrain unless the car is putting out 200+ hp. If you're going through three trannies in a year and half there's one of two things wrong. A) You're using trannies that aren't good to begin with or B) you need to work on your shifting strategies.



That said, I recommend finding a n/a tranny that is in good condition (read: low miles or quality rebuild). There are a number of people online selling them, through both retail fronts and when parting cars. I have driven a number of series 4's for extended periods and have yet to have a tranny fail completely on me. My current tranny has a worn out 1st gear synchro (no problem, just needs a double clutch move) and a previous one had a slightly worn third (again, just requires full engagement of the clutch and a well matched rpm on downshifting). The other two I've had extended experience (thousands of miles) were also both high mileage (100k-150k+) and gave me no troubles.



Also, run synthetic fluid in your tranny, especially if you're shifting hard often or not matching your rpms really well. I use Redline MT and strongly suggest it.

yeah something sounds amiss there.

Whether or not he is highly modified or not, the problem is the trannies are weak, He may be shifting wrong, he may have some issues buying odler transmissions, but the fact remains we all know the T2 tranny is more capable than the N/A trannies. Upgrading to the T2 tranny now will also facilitate the process for a T2 swap in the future, sine we are never happy with the power of our cars. I suggested the T2 upgrade to get him on the right track.

I would tend to agree, if your using junk yard/used transmissions

then you can expect them to blow up again.



why not get yours rebuilt and get a warranty with it?
