Is there a difference between 5 speed transmissions mounted in convertibles and coupes? I need a rebuilt transmission for my 88 convertible and was told there was a difference.

Hmm, good question. I think that the turbo 2 trannys and N/A trannys are different. And so are 5sp and auto, but dont know of convertibles and coupes. I know they had different final ratios, as per the other post. The difference might be in gear ratios and not in fitment.

Thanks, My car is in the shop and the dealer is trying to locate a transmission housing stating mine is warped and causing the noise and vibration while clutch is engaged and transmission is in neutral. After replacing all the internal bearings and the problem continued they decided this was the problem. Would different gear ratios require different housings? This is a non turbo 5 speed....Convertible...

What kind of noise?? Like metal to metal grinding. My car made a noise when the clutch was engaged, pretty loud and nasty, like metal to metal grinding. It turned out to be a bearing. Dont know the name, but it was on the engine/flywheel. When I took the tranny down, i thought it was the clutch bearing, i stuck my finger in the hole of the flywheel, and that bearing there was dry and had some pieces of like solidified dirt in it.(the bearing was a needle bearing) And when turned it didnt have that smooth movement. I greased the sucker up and it stopped.

I hope this helps. Sorry about not knowing the terminology.

That would be the pilot bearing. That is the one thing they did not replace because the new engine I had installed came with one.....however I will look into this...thanks

LIke treceb said. All n/a are the same except a few change at the 5th gear ratio.

Man it sounds like the shop your car is at is trying to screw you over. I would have them just replace your throwout bearing, that is what it sounds like is making the noise. When was the last time you replaced the clutch? My tranny did the same, replaced the bearing, and the noise stopped. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...

The tranny on the vert is different, slightly. I think that a NA tranny would fit right in there. I don't know why they made it different, but they did. And I think it is only the housing that is different. I'm going to be putting a Turbo II tranny in in a few months, and as far as I know it will fit there without any interference. Hope that helps.

I've got an '88 NA 5spd tranny if you want it. It still has good synchros and all, held up fine in the few races it attended as NA. PM for more info if interested...

It is bearing noise when the clutch is engaged, main shaft and flywheel spinning at same speed, once you disengage the clutch the clutch the noise stops. At that point the main shaft is spinning in the pilot bearing and it would seem that is when it should be noisey. I will find out next week as that is when I will get the car back. I will let you know about the transmission then, how much you askin for it...? Thanks Andy
