I know this has been asked 1000 times before. But if I buy a 13BT_Jspec what should I look for when buying the engine? and what do I need to swap?

Radiator?

Transmission?

Fuel Pump?

Fuel line size?

Do the Jspecs come with the top mounted intercooler?

vosko 09-17-2002 09:51 PM

if you get a JSPEC

REBUILD IT

REBUILD IT

did i mention

REBUILD IT ???

radiator is the same i think..... tranny is different, driveshaft, differential, axles, fuel pump, other stuff i have forgotten

jspecs' have a top mount stock

OKIERX-7 09-18-2002 06:17 PM

Don't worry about the fuel lines. They're the same.

ECU

Wiring harness

fuelpump

AFM

pressure sensor

exhaust

Turbo drivetrain(ask me how I know about that one)

clutch

i think thats it...

rxseven 09-18-2002 06:42 PM

so your tranny went out already? Boy that was quick!

Rotaryman88 09-18-2002 06:45 PM

Pressure sensor? You shouldn't have to change that should u? I didn't...

lol..oh well...

Oh yeah Darius, DON"T USE THE NA TRANNY ON A TURBO MOTOR!

lol.. yup lasted about 2000 miles. Everyone told me it would blow, but I never thought it would go out that fast. I probably shouldn't have raced that 5.0 twice the other night. Live and learn I guess. At least I won.

I've got another NA tranny I'll swap in as a temporary, but I've got to get a T2 tranny ASAP. The upside is, a guy in Dallas is gonna give me the LSD rear, half shafts and driveshaft out of an 87 T2. While I'm there I'm picking up a 91 T2 tranny for $250.

So does this mean I'm making more than 250 hp? Maybe, but more than likely it means that the NA tranny was crap to begin with.

Rotaryman88.... Yeah, they are different!! Maybe thats why your engine blew?

vosko 09-18-2002 07:17 PM

pressure sensors are different!

Rotaryman88 09-18-2002 08:54 PM

Well ****, now I gotta get a T2 Pressure sensor from a s5, or does the series matter? probably does....

DAMNIT! lol...just when I thought I was getting soo close.

On a side note, the motor was blown prior to installing it, we just didn't know for sure...

OKIERX-7 09-19-2002 11:43 PM

If I hadda known you needed a pressure sensor before I coulda sent you one. I had a couple extra several months ago.

Sold em for like $60 each.

for the swap I'm doing in my truck I need a tranny but I also wanna get the truck running as soon as possible. If I put my series 5 engine in there with a N/A Tranny, how long would it last. I am rebuilding the engine so I wouldn't be able to drive fast till it breaks in, and I don't drive like a maniac anymore.

Plus I can find N/A trannys all over the place and real cheap too.

you can use any 2 bar map sensor, they are all the same. the s4 t2 makes you add one wire but its not a big deal

It should be alright for conservative driving, but it'll kill it real fast if you start running it hard.

I just got done pulling my NA tranny from my turbo motor. It lasted about 2000 miles. I wouldn't suggest using one unless you just like changing/swapping trannies in and out.

dac 09-20-2002 07:35 PM

What was the clue it was going out?

My N/A Tranny is making noise in 4th gear. Sounds like a bearing.

pengaru 09-20-2002 08:39 PM

man, my NA tranny is going out too but it's just been a slightly modded tired NA motor. People have said in the past things about these boxes being used without trouble in high HP miatas and such. I have my doubts, but you have to consider the fact that our FC's mostly have 100k+ miles on them, and these cars really encourage spirited driving and the transmissions go through alot of high rpm usage. I imagine if you rebuilt your NA trans it would be good for at least 50k miles in a 250-300hp application as long as you don't power shift the **** out of it. Alot of the people talking about their NA transmissions failing are referring to high mileage abused transmissions not surviving extreme abuse.

When I first started building my NA I shopped around for a TurboII trans etc, I've had a number of rx-7 shops tell me the same, unless you produce big power numbers (>= 300HP) and abuse the hell out of the trans (lots of drag racing), a good rebuilt NA transmission will go a long way. Otherwise it's just alot of time, money, effort, wasted on putting a driveline in a chassis that is probably a high mileage one with a tired motor in it anyways, and will just be slower with the beefier (heavier) drivetrain components. You're better off just finding a TurboII to start with rather than turning your NA into one https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

dac, btw, what you need is a TurboII donor car, just find something with a totally fucked body, wrecked or just rusted to hell. Nothing is more frustrating than doing a swap like this and not having a car on hand to pull parts off of, going to junk yards every time you realize you need one little thing that takes hours to pull off with hand tools sucks ass.... I'm sure you realized how convenient having the NA donor for your zuki was.... the only problem with your creation is that you didnt use a TurboII donor instead! :P

good luck man.

dac 09-20-2002 09:49 PM

I've got a Haltech and 550cc injectors. I figured I just need to buy an engine and a transmission and once again have the driveline done (not sure if the Turbo and N/A are the same).

This will be my fall/winter project... but in the spring it will be time to paint!

(I sold my house... so I have to try to do this in an apartment... no garage... no room for any extra cars).

Get a mazda truck pickup tranny, is the same TII tranny, all you have to is swap out the bell housing. Vosko, what year truck B2000 86?

C

dac 09-20-2002 10:49 PM

The guts may be the same but the externals are not. The B2000 has the shifter placed much closer forward than the RX7. So you'd have to swap the guts.

Clue?! I only wish I had been that lucky. I had downshifted into second while turning into my bank. When I went to drive away from the teller window, I had the car in first gear but it went backwards instead. I couldn't get it out of reverse and had to park it.

Otherwise I never had any problems with the tranny. I would never grind the gears, and had no problems shifting. When the synchros blow out, the metal tabs that lock the gear sleeves into place get locked in position. Being as the 5th/reverse synchros are the weakest its usually the 5th gear synchro that goes because it sees the most HP. So, the 5th synchro breaks forcing the sleeve to become locked to the reverse gear. You'll never know it happened until its too late.

bigtime 09-21-2002 03:10 PM

i think vosko forgot to mention that u have to rebuild it
