ok so heres the deal. I put a 13b 6 port in a 63 vw bug. Complete conversion. I got the car to run great for a bit, it dies and doesnt start. I've cleaned the plugs severl times. I'm running a holly 600 on a phunalic spacer jet extensions. The exaust is pretty short due the fact that I mad it to fit under the vw. I could really use some expert opinions. when it ran It ran great. Sometimes it dies, then I can get it to start again. I'm using the stock oil metering valve as well. Any ideas'?

does it still have spark when it starts running bad?

dewme52 04-12-2009 07:20 PM

From the description, sounds like a major jetting issue. It starts, shuts of once in a while, then once it gets warm, it will still crank, but not run.

1. is there a choke on your carb?

2. When you clean your plugs, what do they look like. The tell tail sign, is deep inside the plug, not the ceramic portion right next to the electrode.

3. Does it run smooth while it is running.

4. is your ignition in good shape?

5. are you pulling good vacuum at idle? / possible vac leaks.

hehe sorry i forgot i think fi only most of the time

it is possible, There is no intake leaks, the plugs were pretty fouled. I cleaned them with brake clean the used pressurized air, When it runs its great! Any suggestions on what jets to use? The carb was originally on a big block and I did not change them, I figured they were big enough.

I was thinking. My alt just falied and I know that the ignition wires run through it. Do you think that maybe this might be an issue as well?

Your primary jets should be 64s, measure that size with a wire gauge and match the holes in the secondary metering plate to that size. Make the primary side airbleeds a little smaller and open the secondary throttle plates a little mire. Close the throttle plates on the primaries a bit. Close the idle enrichment screws in a ll the way and back them out one and a half turns. ( I am giving you directions based on the assumption that this carb has no chocke system installed and that everything else on the carb is in good working order.

Fix alternator and work from there. That should be a good starting point.
