Has anyone coverted their A/C system to R134A? I need to tune up the system, instead of recharging w/ R12 figured I would look into a coversion. Is there a kit available for our cars? Is it a matter of just replacing a few seals to handle the higher pressures?



Removing the A/C is not an option, so please don't bother to suggest it. A black car in Texas in the summmer sux.

yeah but r12 is illegal unlesss you have a license . autozone sells a kit for $35.00 with 3 cans of free on (r134a) one oil recharge and all the fitiings and other crap so ima do that. Just make sure ure **** is empty iight

I have a license, somewhere. I was one of the first people in the US to be reclaimation and recovery certified. That was a long time ago, got out of the HVAC business nine years ago. Just wanted to see if there was anyone on the forum that has done the conversion, if it was worth it, and how well it was working.

I had it done on the vert Im selling ( that is sold to the next door neighboor )



Seems to be working a-ok.

You people seem to forget what R12 costs if you can even find it.

Did you do it yourself or did you take it somewhere? What did the conversion cost you? (If you don't mind me asking)



There are also some R12 replacements such as hotshot and freeze 12 that don't require higher pressure as R134a does. Has anyone used these?

I paid $130 but I had a bunch of other stuff done at the same time, he changed the

manual tranny fluid and topped off the rear end, etc..

So its cant be that much.

in Toronto, the prices that i got quoted were around 200 bucks, This includes sucking out all the old oil that was for R12, then refilling with the oil suitable to the R134a, then refilling the system.



That does not include diagnosing why you need to refill your system in the frist place.



I have also heard that using R134a in a R12 system, it will stress the compressor and cause it to prematurely fail.



i wouldn't use the freeze 12 or other stuff, that stuff is based on propane or butane...



basically any gas that can be easily compressed can be used, since it can also be throttled easily

To convert from R12 to R134a you just need to have your system vacummed out so there is no trace of R12. Then you have to change the fittings and put the a can of Oil charge. then once thats done the can should get cold while you are putting it in the low hose. Then you should put 2 cans of R134a and have the AC running at full load while you are adding the new Freeon. then test the air temperature in the center console with a thhingy mabob that measures temp lol. ANd thats what i know. Like i said autozone sells the whole kit.
