i have an 89 rx7 GTUs i've seen a blue rx7 with same body style but it says just plain GTU, it has a single exhaust, thats the only difference i can see. does anyone know the difference? :bigok:
Um...I have an 88 GTU and it has dual exhaust. Someone said the GTUs were rare only a few made. I wish I could remember ithe site I once visited. It has alot about paint colors and option packages. It was on the rx-7 web ring if that helps any :(
gtus were series 5, gtu was series 4. I believe that the gtus had the same suspension/brakes as the turbo and an aluminum hood.
The GTUs also is the only model with the 4.30 ring and pinion for quicker acceleration.
There were only 100 GTUs' made. They had 100 spoke rims, bigger brakes and LSD.
ok...... um GTU was auctually s5's also.....
i have a 90 GTU...... and by the way there was 1500 GTU's not 100 |
my car is an 89 gtu it might be a GTUs i will just have to look but i have noticed it has all the same componets as a turbo, but the turbo. i only paid 300 dallers for the car with a bad engine it only has 80,000 miles on it and there are only a few miner deffects https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR

the 90 GTUs is the really rare one, 89GTUs is not so rare, but far less common than say a GXL.
Any GTUs is rare!

Ok, For S5 the GTU was the base model. In 1990, there were only 100 GTUses.
ok, to clear this up, in 89 the GTU was the "sport model" it was everything from the turbo, except the turbo, in 90 the GTU's was the "sport model" and the GTU was the base model. why they changed it, the world may never know, anyone?
and to clear up the rarity issue they made 100 90 GTUs' and the GTU isnt the base model its the model under the GTUs' which they got rid of so for 90 the GTU replaced the GTUs as the sportiest one under the turbo (rx-7 book)

heres the way it goes friends
86...2nd generation introduced. turbocharged version was offered for the first time. Engine modifications on normally aspirated 13b increased hp to 146, and the turbo version had 182. Two transmissions available; mazda 5spd manual and jatco 4 spd auto. all models featured fully independent rear suspension. auto-adjusting suspension was standard on the gxl. base models had sigle piston front calipers; gxl and sports-packaged equipped models used 4 piston front calipers. 4 wheel discs standard on all models. and rear seats were available for the first time. 87... anti-lock braking was added as an option on gxl and turbo models. Starter interlock added to manual transmission models (clutch pedal had to be depressed for the car to start). 88...factory built convertable offered which added 378 lbs. base models now called se, a new gtu model was added. standard on the gtu was sport-tuned suspension, sport seats, aerodynamic body pieces, limited slip diff. and body colored electric mirrors. 10th anniversery package offered abs, leather upholstery and a special audio system. all 1500 cars came in monochromatic white. 89...base engine horsepower increased to 160,turbo to 200. engines recieved more refinement, more compression, lighter rotors and better breathing. automatic transmission was available in the convertable for the first time. gtu became the base model; GTUs came with the handling package of the turbo models, with normally aspirated engine. body recieved mild facelift and body colored rubstrips. 90...airbag passive restraint for the convertable available. the GTUs model was dropped after 100 models were produced. 91...only three models offered; coupe, turbo and convertable. the gtu and gxl models merged, simply named the rx-7 coupe. 92...no new models were produced. 1991 model sales carried over into 92 |

correct if wrong but GTUs was only made in 89

89 and 90

Other than the 4.30 rear end, and slightly rejigged tranny ratios as well, an S4 GTU or S5GTUs is just a cool collectible. Now they are old enough to need suspension upgrades, the upgraded brakes are easily obtained from the dime-o-dozen GXl's out there, and all the visual stuff is of no use on the track.....I think a pure base model na, with manual steering and none of the power junk is a better starting point.
So would a '91 coupe automatic have a LSD rear?
So where does my 1991 GTR fit in ? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/wacko.gif it has no abs and apparently a higher output engine is this true?
