speedo died.. registers 0 mph

systems affected.. steering and odometer



thought i provide a quick writeup



*lowered the steering column

*removed 5 gauge panel screws.. 2 underneath 3 right above the gauges

*pulled four connectors.. 2 each side

*pulled the panel

*removed 4 screws on the instrument cluster

*slid the rubber grommet along the cable away from the firewall inside the engine bay

*slid the cable further in the interior of the car to give slack to pull the instrument cluster

*unclipped the cable connector to the speedometer

*jacked up the driver side

*unclipped the cable supports under the body

*with an adjustable wrench removed the locknut attached to the tranny

fyi.. theres a notch on the cable that coincides with the tranny side..



took few weeks to get the mazda cable so the odo is off about 1k miles..

btw.. you can snake your arm to remove and replace the cable from the back of the gauge cluster fom underneath

but at thirty four.. not as nimble nor patient as i used to be..

My cable came undone from my transmission one night. To keep it from dragging on the ground, I just pulled the cable out and put it in my passenger seat. The next day, I just shoved the cable all the way back up in the sheath, put the slotted end back in the transmission, and screwed the cap back down. All was done from underneath the car in one fell swoop.



Speedo works fine too. I dont know why you all are removing your instrument panel to do this...

Maybe my car is just a freak?

broken cable is not the same as a cable thats just undone..

new cable provides for new sleeve and connections..

if your implying to remove the cable from the new sleeve and replace into the existing...

its half assed imho providing the switch is okay to do

the task took roughly only half an hour...

and i dont see an advantage in trading off shaving minutes and sacrificin a new part...
