Hey everyone. I'm a newbie and I've always been interested in rotary engines but I don't have any experience with them. I have a 1986 Monte Carlo SS so I've only had experience with small block Chevy's. Anyways, a neighbor down the street is selling his 1989 GTU. It's red, has a little door dings, 5 speed, and has about 99,000 miles. He wants $2800 for it. Is that a fair deal? What are some of the things I should look for when I test drive it? Also, I've heard something about leaking oil or the Apex seal. How do I check that?

Where else can I check on stats and specs on different RX-7's and what are the different types: GTU... I've been looking around the different web-sites but have been having trouble finding any info on the different types. Any help is appreciated, Ed.

$2800 for an rx7 isn't bad, seeing as they're a rare and beautiful car, but you do have to be careful of what you're looking for.



First off, when you start it up, listen to how many times it cranks over....if it's more then 5 or 6 when you start it, that means the motor's almost done.



Secondly, rotary engine's tend to go just before the hit 200,000 km's but I mean I have been proven wrong on a few special occasions.



Check out the handling and see how smooth the car is when you ride it.



The apex seals are what keep the motor running at a certain compression, if he tells you that you need new apex seals...don't buy it!!! that basically means you have to rebuild your motor...and you don't wanna do that!! cuz of the $$$$$$$$

like Garrett said, make sure the car runs smoothly all around



should idle smoothly around 750-800



make sure it revs up without hesitation (while accelerating)



after you take the car out for a spin and bring it back, turn it off...wait a few minutes and make sure it starts up again. (if it doesn't, it could have a flooding problem, which could also mean low compression and a tired motor)



check for leaks (oil/coolant/etc)
