I have a 20B cosmo and one of the exhasut sleeves (I think thats what it is) is loose. This means that there are pins loose somewhere.
Can I just tack weld it in place? I guess this won't be possible as there are two different metals used. http://members.ozemail.com.au/~bj.sm...mo/exhaust.avi Hope you experts can help me. Also - has anyone high flowed the standard turbos? I want a bit more power but don't want to go to a single yet as I expect that will also require computers etc etc. |
seems like you could tack it in there? or if the motors apart, use a larger pin?

I had a customer's engine show up like that a couple months ago. At the time he didn't want to tear the entire engine down to fix it right so I built up some weld on the flange of the manifold and worked it with a grinder so that it rested against the sleeve and held it firmly in place. Those things make a hell of a racket flopping around in there!
It ended up being a moot point as the flywheel key sheared off shortly after that and I pulled the engine down to the bolts to make sure nothing else was going to fall apart on it. That thing was a PIECE! Problem with "just tack welding it" is that there is nothing to weld to. Kind difficult to weld the steel sleeve to the aluminum housing. |

Here is another question. Is there any reason why the pin could not go completely through the housing and out the sleeve? What I am thinking is that if its still in there I can get it out through the sleeve end. Does anyone have a picture of one of these pins? |
OK - I have been away for work for a week and just got back. i went and had a look and the pins are still in there. It looks like it started to get a bit loose and had slowly ground away to be like this.
There doesn't apear to be any way to get the pins out from the sleeve side so I think I will take your advice and get the welds built up to hold it in place. I was considering getting a shim machined up to hold it there but am unsure what the expansion rates etc in the heat are and what damage it may do - particularly to the gasket. I think I will get it done so its got a bead around a quarter of the hole on the top and the bottom. That should hold it in ok. |
Done. I ended up using a shim. Its worked well so far.
