Hello peoples. I am joining the 20B club. I picked up my 20B tuesday and I'm really excited on carrying this project out. I am everything laid out pretty much. My only concern is oil cooling and water cooling.



Anyone having trouble keeping the oil temps low with a stock TII oil cooler on a 3 rotor setup? I was thinking of running dual TII oil coolers.



Anyone having trouble keeping engine water temps low in traffic? Will that FC koyo radiator be sufficient enough? I can pick up a 2 row GM radiator from jegs really cheap. They are huge too! $160 or so.



Cooling is my main concern. I would like to use the stock clutch fan setup as nothing really beats cooling that way. I might hook up a ford taurus fan as a secondary fan when things really heat up.



Well, here are my pics and I'll post updates. My timeframe of completion is 2 months.



This is a 20B "C". I will be running stock sequentials. What's the max boost the sequentials can run? I have a nice sized SPEARCO FMIC to compliment the intake charge cooling.

I don't want to come off two sarcastic but really why would you buy a 20b then go cheap and run the oil cooling system from a TII? Personally if i were to spend the time and cash involved in making that engine swap I would definitely upgrade the cooling system to something more efficient that stock mazda junk.

I wounldn't even have think twice about it.

That aside the engine looks complete in the pictures. Does it still have good compression?

i had no trouble with the oil temps, but i remounted the oil cooler so it wasnt blocked by anything.



you need the biggest radiator you can find, and duct it well, the 20b runs HOT, like fd+ hot. theres also no way the stock clutch fan will fit, unless you put a bulge in the hood for it. 20b is longer.....



how are you gonna control the sequentials? stock ecu? did you get the 20b coils? stock ecu uses wierd coils.

The stock FC oil cooler is better than the majority of aftermarket oil coolers out there.

Have you ever seen one???



Although dual oil coolers in the corners would be ideal, getting enough airflow to them is a whole nother problem.

We're going to eventually go dual aftermarket oil coolers in the corners, but we're building a custom front bumper to get adequate airflow to the corners first.



In the meantime, we're using dual stock FC oil coolers in parallel in approximately the stock location.

For a 20B NA with no turbos, we've run it hard on the track with no oil cooling problems.

Previously, it was hitting 220F on the oil temps pretty quickly and not coming down fast enough with just one FC oil cooler.

The bad thing about this arrangement is that is blocks a LOT of airflow up front.

With only 232 at the wheels coming from the 20B NA, the upgrade rad is able to cool it with an electric fan no problem.

We worry once the 20B goes turbo, adding a huge FMIC in is just going to restrict airflow too much.

Thus, once the FMIC goes in, we're going to see if we can go with the dual aftermarket oil coolers in the corners at about the same time...

As a matter of fact I have not. I would assume that they are about the same as the 3rd gen one which if you ask me is nothing to write home about. Yes it works. Again if I were going through the trouble of an engine swap to a 20b would I use a stock oil cooler from sometime before 1992? Hell no I wouldn't. But hey call me crazy. If it works it works I guess that is the logic you have on this. Fair enough. I think you get what I am saying Ted since you even mention that you plan to upgrade in the future.

The stock TII oil cooler is one of (if not the) biggest ever put in a production car iirc. They are pretty meaty. However every one ive seen is caked full of **** from being on the road for 15 years https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Alot of people snag FC oil coolers as there is nothing better out there. I was simply thinking of stacking them and maybe run a fan behind them. We will see. I will most definetly have an oil temp gauge to monitor the temps.



I'm stuck in the middle between choosing the Haltech E11v2 or Microtech LT12. As people complain about the E11's endless bugs, and nothing but praises on Microtechs, I'm hesitent to buy an EMS yet. I'll probably wait until the last minute to decide.



As for ignition, I will be using TII coils with a Jacobs Power FC 1000. I'm going to tear her down tomorrow, clean stuff up, and do a street port. I'm going to stick with the sequentials, unless I run across a single turbo that makes me want to do something I really shouldn't... My main concern is water temps and oil temps. All input is greatly appreciated as I do not know what I am up against. I drive alot of canyons, and things surely do heat up as I noticed with my T66 setup @ 1.3 bar.

Congrats, Rez!! Nice looking engine you've got there!



Thus far, I've had no issues with my cooling. I'm using a stock oil cooler (moved slightly), GReddy FMIC, Fluidyne rad and an electric fan. My hood is a stock TII that has an RE Amemiya-style reverse vent in it



We'll see what happens once I go single, but I think it'll be ok. ::shrug::

Which is why its CHEEP insurance to have your cooler cleaned by a FAA certified facility.
