Well just found out my alt on my 13B-RE is bad https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif Only puts out 11volts on the test bench at Checker auto so my question is does the 20b or FD use the same one? Or do you guys think if I brought it somewhere they could rebuild this "japan only" alternator?

i think the fd one is close, it uses the same belt. if not you could prolly put the fd guts into the cosmo case, or use the fb/fc alt and belts/water pump. they dont rebuild alternators in japan afik so a new one would be $$$$

I kinda want to use this one because it has the serpentine belt pulley to match my serpentine water pump pulley and crank pulley. Think I can take the guts from my a FC alt I have here and put them in the cosmo one?

I've had my FD alternator rebuilt. I don't think it's with Japanese parts though, because it came back with a 1/2" nut on the positive terminal https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png



Apparently this guy sucks ****, though. Said mine was a mess and gave me a different one. Drove 2 hours and the voltage never went over 12.8 Vdc. Got it tested and it put out 10 Vdc when it should do 15 Vdc. Took it back. He then rebuilt my original and gave it to me. Had it tested, worked fine. Since my Optima Yellow Top was stone dead because it hadn't been charging, we put it on a charger. One of those big old ones every shop has. It heated the hell out of the battery, and must have blew up the alternator, because it tested bad on Saturday. Sent it back again and put the Optima on a charger (my own) with a setting for deep cycle batteries. Battery is finally fully charged, didn't heat up, and hopefully the alternator will last this time.



Moral of the story.



Disconnect your alternator if you have to charge / boost your battery. Do not use one of those big old chargers on your deep cycle battery unless it has a setting for it. If you can afford it, buy a new alternator. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png

Hmm, not sure exactly. Got it all done while I was getting the turbo installed, so it was kind of a package deal. Alternator was outsourced as a part of the package.



I think it would depend on what they have to do. I'm not too familiar with alternator components and failures, but I imagine if they have to re-wind it and replace the regulator it would cost a lot more than just the regulator or a diode. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

Well took it down to the local starter and alternator rebuilder place. They threw it on their test bench and it showed that it charged and that it could push 100A but the low side didn't work. When the low side doesn't work you don't get dash idiot lights when the key is in the "on" position when it isn't running. I think I'm just going to run it and see what happens. Hell, worst thing that can happen is I throw on a FC setup with V belts or get this one re done for 65-70 bucks (new regulator).



It was funny though, he said when he was testing it it would slip the belt because of the high output and the small diameter pulley. Guess these cosmo alternators got some grunt!
