ok so the 84 has been sitting for a while. Went to start it the other day and get nothing but "click click" So I fire up the Bronco get the tow ropes and drag it up the drive way. Get in roll down drive way pop the clutch and nothing! It ran fine before it sat for a about a month. last thing I did was take the headlight relay out for my dads car. any ideas?

click click = dead battery?

new battery and starter

ZenRXSeven 09-03-2003 03:35 PM

Is it cranking? If it's not cranking, then something's wrong with the starter. If it's a new starter, are you sure it's wired correctly?

nod1stgen 09-03-2003 03:55 PM

If it was the starter it would start during a push start....but how far did you let it roll before you poped the clutch?

The length of a driveway wont do it after a month, unless you change alot of stuff to new or extremely clean. Id Try it again, get someone to pull you with the bronco(thats what I use), ride in second with the clutch and the choke out and the pedal full. Its probably just a dead battery.

Ive had to tow my car with it running in 2nd gear at 3000rpm for like 2 miles before it came to life. It would keep spitting and sputtering and die when i pushed in the clutch. Eventually it stayed running on its own. New spark plugs help a lot.

nod1stgen 09-03-2003 09:04 PM

Exactly....What He Said.

RX7CMS 09-04-2003 01:02 PM

I rolled for a while I have a long drive way. I would say I got up to at 10mph if my spedo cable wasnt broken! Bill (rotaryman88) is coming over on friday and we will try again.

rexguy 09-04-2003 03:30 PM

ok, you have to have a good charged battery to pop start it, cause you need something for a spark. I'd say give it a charge or replace the battery

Once the alt starts spinning you have power. You dont even need to have a battery in the car.

You need a battery.Just doesn't need any power in it to bomb start it.

evolutioned_rx7 09-06-2003 11:32 PM

does any of your lights work? check your battery cabels and most importantly grounnding. Next I wuld have fun with some starting ether.

If it is a DC generator with very large magnets, then yes, give it

a spin and you get electricity.

You can spin an alternator as fast as you want, but without

electricity to make the electromagnetic fields, it produces nothing.

My VDO and dash gauge both read about 13V with the key in the on position and when I turn it the volts drop and I get nothing. The starting ether wont work becuase theres no spark. I didnt get a chance to roll start it again on fri. im thinking starter but its brand new or a bad ground again. I had this happen before with this car when it sat for a while

ZenRXSeven 09-07-2003 04:20 PM

That sounds like a dead battery. Happened with my '85 S. Voltage gauge read ~12V, but when I turned the key, nothing happened, all the dash lights went dim and the voltage dropped to nothing. Swapped in a good battery, and the starter cranked just fine. Just didn't start the engine, 'cause I'm not getting any spark. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Im just going to take the battery to Autozone and let them do a good charge on it see if it helps the battery isnt that old maybe 4months. I think I have an Alt. problem also from last time I had it running. wouldnt recharge the battery. im going to swap in a S4 alt if thats the one that will?

SA22C 09-07-2003 07:24 PM

If you turn the key and everything goes dead, that sounds like a bad connection at the battery. My '79 did the same thing, so I changed the terminals and cleaned the posts. Voila, it started just fine.

As for the pull start, I'm at a loss. Both of my RX-7s started with very little velocity, even in sub zero temperatures. If my battery went dead, all I had to do was give her a push, jump in and hit the clutch. I would think that you're not getting spark if it doesn't start by pulling.

RX7CMS 09-08-2003 02:02 PM

Ok just got back from Autozone with the charged battery 14.6v. put it in the first few times it just clicked but that click is the starter doing what it does. then the I tried again and it turned over but didnt start and now im back to just clicking. The other funny thing I noticed is when the key is in the on position the warning lights come but when I turn it all the lights go off and the brake light comes on? Im thinking the clutch switch is bad?

Dragon 09-08-2003 02:16 PM

You probably have a bad ground. or did you by chance hook up the plarity wrong, Ie. pos on the neg and neg on the pos terminals.. This would bad.. remove the bolts holding your groun wire to the chassi and the block and wire brush them contact point and the terminals on the wire and reconnect them. They just Oxidized and arn't making good contact any more so the battery can provide the Amps needed to run the starter etc.

RX7CMS 09-08-2003 02:24 PM

plarity is right. have to check the ground i guess

rexguy 09-08-2003 02:31 PM

Hey, you said its a new starter, so is one of the cables on that loose? I replaced a started once and didn't get one of the lock nuts on tight and it would intermitantly work. Guess its a place to look https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

RX7CMS 09-08-2003 05:07 PM

Ok added a push button starter. Then I got the Bronco out and took it up the drive way. First pop nothing, second pop it started! I drove around for a little while still snatches 2nd with ease https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif Parked it and tried to start it again same problem?

nod1stgen 09-08-2003 08:15 PM

GROUND!

Theres only two things it can be.

Bad ground

Bad starter solenoid.

If the starter is new, then that leaves ground.

It'll either be the ground on the battery(doubtful), or the ground on the starter(more likely), or one of the few grounds to the frame from(or to) the starter.

If none of this works, or you have this problem every once in a while, have your starter tested, the solenoid is bad.
