As of late my 1984 gsl has developed a strange charging problem. One night while I was driving I noticed the voltometer reading at 12 Volts. I figured The alternator had finally gave out and I would need a new one. It turns out on the way home the alternator kicked back in and started pumping 13.5 again and everything got brighter. Over the next 2 weeks this process happened a bunch of times with the alternator downtime getting longer and longer until it finally quite. I took the Alt. to Schucks and it was flatline. So I got it rebuilt. We tossed it on the tester at the rebuild place and it is pumping almost 15 volts. However when I put it on my car it does the same thing for about 20 minutes, up in volts down in volts until it dies all the way again. So I take it back down to the rebuilder and toss it back on the tester, 15 volts. Just to be safe I take it to every local parts store and have them test it. 3 out of 4 say it is running great and should work fine. The forth says there is an "internal short" and it is toast. I don't know if I am dealing with a bad voltage regulator, a wiring problem in the car, a grounding problem, etc. This is driving me crazy!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif

Any help would be most appreciated

THERE MUST BE A SHORT SOMEWERE BECAUSE I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WHEN I USE TO HAVE MY 89 LINCOLN LSC AND TO FIND OUT IT WAS MY DIGITAL CLOCK/MPG/ ALL THAT BULL. BUT WHEN DOES IT START DOIN THAT OR DOES IT DO IT RIGHT WHEN U START IT UP. IF IT DRAINS AS SOON AS U START IT UP IT MUST BE A SHORT SOMEWERE THATS CONECTED TO THE IGNITION. SO WHAT I WOULD DO IS LOOK FOR THE FUES THAT STARTS THAT CAR AND ONCE U FIND THAT FUES LOOK UP WHAT THAT FUES FUESES UP. AFTER U LOOK UP WHAT THAT FUES FUES'S CHECK THEM AND SEE IF A WIRE IS SPLIT OR JUST CHECK OR JUST START DISCONECTING THE THINGS THAT'S ARE HOOKED UP TO THE FUES AND HOPEFULLY U'LL FIND UR PROBLEM
