As the title says... I have an AE86 corolla with a stock 1985 12A in it and the carb needs replacing. What options do i have other than using another oem carb? What is the cfm on the stock carb? will a holley 4xx cfm fit the stock intake mainfold?

does anyone here have a gooc oem nikki carb forsale?

Thanks,

Micah

First, are you sure the carb needs replacing? If the engine is running poorly, check the basics first, starting with a tune-up.

There are several options for replacing your carb. For about $300 you can get a Sterling or PB&J modded carb. I have a PB&J that ran fine on my half-bridge. Right now I'm running dual Weber 36DCDs on a Rotary Engineering intake manifold - these setups are a little hard to find now, and a Weber 48IDA on a Racing Beat manifold will outflow it. Look at spending $500 or more on a good downdraft Weber setup. Sidedraft setups usually go a little cheaper, I've seen DCOE setups (forget what size chokes, 44?, 36?) sometimes go for as little as $300. A Holley will not bolt up to the stock manifold, but Racing Beat makes a Holley manifold. The carburetor will need a fair amount of modification to work right. If you want a Holley, the easiest way to go would be Racing Beat's manifold and prepped carb.

thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to know!

the carb works but it's old and the floats are stuck so it floods out and it's just not visually appealing anymore.

I'll try to get some pics up for ya this weekend. I bought the car already swapped but i have taken the engine and tranny out and put it back in, so I under stand the swap front and back. It's quite simple really, with minimal cutting and welding involved. It's not fancy the guy I bought it from just left it sitting for so long and gettting nasty, so it's been a slow cleaning and tune up process...

I would go with a 500 cfm Edelbrock thunder series carb on either a racing beat intake of modify yours. This is a very simple carb to tune once you learn how to do so. No spilt fuel, hell you can change the primaries by means of a metering rod change in 2 minutes. The secondaries are mechanical and they are fully adjustable with a screwdriver (no vacuum pod and springs to play with), air fuel idle adjustment couldn't be more accessible (piece of cake), electric choke and high speed idle adjustment are easy to work with as well. For throttle linkage I simply modified a piece of Nikki linkage onto the Edelbrock linkage and obtained a throttle plate to go under the carb and a 12a throttle cable works perfect. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc...c/thunder.shtml

You'll see here what I did with the 12a intake to fit the Holley or Edelbrock. I ported out the top of the intake to match the tapered spacer I had. I mounted the spacer to the top of the intake by drilling it to match the factory carb stud pattern and then counter sunk bolts into the spacer and bolted it to the 12a intake after modifying the intake. I removed the shutter valve and JB welded a bolt into the shaft to seal it up. Cut the emissions tubes, sealed with JB weld and crimped them. The only left is to intall the block off plate I have in my toolbox and it's good to go! I did this to help out my buddy so he can run his car while getting his 4 year old Camden rebuilt. Cost, intake $0, tools $0 (have compressor and air die grinder), carbide bit $18, JBWeld $8, space $20 (but I had one so it was 0 to me), misc bolts $0 (junk kicking around that happened to fit), Total= $46

Man I had forgotten just how far from level the 12A sat. Thats a nice little setup there. I looks like something I would have made. lol. Good work.

The stock manifold is lumpy and ill-tuned for performance. If you're going to step up to a Holley, you'll (at least eventually) want to step up to an intake designed for it.

I would agree on the intake upgrade (racingbeat) but if you are limited on funds and can only afford the carb now, than this is a good means for the meantime. It will be mounted on a halfbridge 12a soon for testing. Will submit pics and video when done.
