Ok I thought I posted this once..but I cant find it .I wanted to know ..most people here are just rotary fanatics?Or is there anyone with expereince on them.And im not talking about with bolt on acceories,I wanted to know about ..whos got a good template with street porting 12a"s Also what kinda rear end can I put on a 1st gen ...size dont matter but i have had people tell me old datsuns/toyota pickups if so what year?Late 70s?and what are they geared at....also im looking for a short shifter for a 1st gen 5 speed 84 trans...

Check out http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm for short shifters. A Ford 9" will work in a 1st gen.

The cool thing about going with the ford 9" is you have an infinite selection of gearing. :thumbsup:

That's what just about everybody uses for 1st gen's.

The mazda dif's are pretty strong,but if your V8 ing your 1st

gen,or tubbing for 14X32's then go ford 9' with "n" case 3rd

member.and 31 spline for 9K launching,,bullet proof,,

if your not that RACE maybe a ford 8',,i'd say no matter what

you end up with make sure it has disk brakes,,R & P's for 9'

has a lot of support for gear ratio's,,i think hooker makes

something for 9' and rx7(early)cars.to built and drag race a

V8 rx7

Hey Sorrow, wooffinn here. Mechanic here who's been playing with Mazda's too long! When you say template, are you thinking of porting it yourself? I'm from downunder, so I'm not sure of your rotary shops over there. Without the proper know how, it's very easy to stuff your plates. I personally send my plates to be ported; I know what to do but people specialize in that for good reason.

Again over here, there a multitude of rear end options, with the most popular being the Toyota commerial series ie 4wd hilux and hiace vans. Both diffs are very strong and come in wide variety of ratios from low 4's up to mid 6's.The Ford diffs aren't as popular here really only because of the cost involved compared to other systems.

You've got to remember the braking systems also. Something I see too often, is overbraking at the rear and incorrect brake proportional valves/systems. Like any mods, do your homework. My theory in my shop is, I don't mind if they don't go, it's when they don't stop you've got a problem.

Im scared to port myself...I have friends that has done porting ...but they all go bridge.......I have 2 other cars to drive BUT bridge porting is not good on long drives..and I heard it gets hot quickly.



Most of the templates I see for porting here and big bridges...

I dont care about sound [loudness] of bridge port but hows it on long drives?

This will just be a weekend playtoy and maybe ocassonally taken to the drag strip for a 4cyl shoot out to kill some Hondas and Toyotas.

I just talked to another guy here in Tampa today ..hes got a disc brake rear end off a mid 80s Nissan 240sx and he said he has gears from a 73 Datsun pickup...



I know I can get the rear end off a 240, but getting gears from a 73 pick up?lol



OK about for 9in ....gears are expensive for them...I was thinking just staying for a gm 10 bolt and 4.11 gears.

But I need to figure something soon....im parking the car and getting it redone....

They are not hard to drive! IF its kicking around, you downshift a gear and drive it in that gear for crusing. IF your going over 65-70 range 5th gear should work. Bridgports just kick around a little when in part throttle conditions.
