my tach isnt working at all. what are some common causes for this?

Bstrickler 04-19-2006 11:13 AM

Blown fuse, broken solder joint, lots of basic things.

Is this a 1st gen? If so, then check your trailing ignitor (the tach runs off of this)...

this car had an MSD 6A ignition when I got it (pretty recently) and the tach has never worked. where would the tach hook up? Also the fuse is fine.

Does the tach even move when you have the car on, but not running (because that shows the battery voltage, or at least it does on SA's)? If not, its more than likely an electrical problem, and you might have to pull the dash out, and fix it.

the tach never moves on/off runing or not.

Bstrickler 04-19-2006 11:38 AM

Is it an SA22? I've never looked at the tach on an FB.

greengold 04-19-2006 01:56 PM

it is an fb. I was just looking at the owners manual on MSD's website and noticed there is a tach output on one end of it, and on mine this isn't hooked up to anything. where do i connect it?

I take it you're using one MSD on the leading ignition and the trailing ignition is still stock. If you have only one MSD and anything different, you have something wrong.

Look at the ignitors on the distributor. The one nearest the front should be removed or tapped to run the MSD, the other should still be hooked up to the stock wiring harness. The MSD's tach output shouldn't be attached to anything. If all this is correct and you're still not getting tach, spark check your trailing plugs. If there's nothing, replace your trailing ignitor.

the setup is: one MSD 6A hooked to the leading coil with jumpers running to the trailing coil so that it is powering both. Both coils are MSD too, if that makes any diff.
