Hey my car is occasionally not starting. It has power and it clicks when i turn the key but nothing else. All of the electrical stuff works, and the voltimeter shows 12 before turning the key but i havent had the chance to put my multimeter on it yet. Does this sound more like the battery or the starter? Oh sorry, i left out the most important part and that is that it will start as soon as i put cables on it and jump it.
|
well if it works when you jump it then it cant be the starter, right? i mean it works when you add an external power source (jumping it) so theres no reason it wouldnt work off a good battery. so i think you can rule out it being a dead starter.
|
no i think i remember this happening before when it was the starter. I think it would be the solenoid not working unless it has more than 12 volts.

My 626 did something very similar. I could have sworn it was the battery. I even replaced the battery I was so sure. Well, it was the starter. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

my bad. just when i thought i knew somethin... haha
thats weird that it wouldnt work without more than 12volts, cause obviously they're designed for 12volts... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png anyway, good luck |
I recently had the same problem 85' Rx7 and it turned out that the ignition switch was loose and had to be replaced. So I would check your ignition switch, otherwise if that is the problem it will only get worse.

it could also be the battery cables/terminals they need to have a good clean tight connection

Not a bad idea to replace your battery cables now anyway, if they are original. I had similar starter issues and I replaced everything with 1 gauge cables for about $24 Canadian.
|
i looked at the cables and they look good, look like theyre pretty new. Im thinking of getting a ground kit for it though, does anyone know where i can get one or should i just make one up myself?
|
It seems like a starter issue. Next time it does it, whack the solenoid with a wrench, and see if it starts.
REmemeber: a running car puts out 14 volts, not 12. |
