Over the past couple weeks my 85' Rx7 has had a stalling problem. I'll be driving along and the car stalls out, complete power loss. This has happened three times, after a couple tries the car always starts back up. I have noticed recently that sometimes when I turn key in the ignition, nothing happens. I'm thinking that this might be an ECU or control module problem that might be occuring when the wiring heats up and either of these components heats up to the point where they just shut down. Has anyone out there had the same problem? Let me know. Thanks

that's one of them things where unless you are there when it happens its kind of hard to determine over writing. but here's a couple of ideas. You stated that after a couple of tries the car will start up, so next time it does this check for spark to see if its an ignition problem, if so you would take it from there by checking coils and igniters and so forth. If spark is there I would check to make sure you got fuel, if carburated you could remove aircleaner and look down the throttle bore while you pull on accelerator and check for fuel spray, but best thing would probably be to install a fuel psi gauge for either carb or efi. Cheaper way check behind driver side seat below storage bin there is a 2 wire harness that goes thru the floor to your fuel pump and check for a signal with a fuse tester. If no signal suspect a wiring or relay if equipped. If there is a signal and you have spark you'll need a psi gauge......lots of mumbo jumbo...blah blah blah but just something to get you started on your diagnosis of your problem. Does it spit and sputter like a fuel prob or does it go from running correctly to a complete loss of power? I had the same problem right before my ignition switch bit the dust on me. I went and replaced with a cheap 7dollar ign switch and mounted it where my choke knob and cable used to go and havent had a problem since. The wiper contacts on the backside of the ignition switch can either break or become dirty and it wont make contact correctly, mine actually got hung up and crunched itself. I ended up having to hotwire the car just to make it home. Look into it before it leaves ya stranded, good luck

ok i have had a simular problem, i would turn the key and everything goes died? its your battery check your battery or replace it

It took a long time to figure out what was causing my 85' Rx7 to stall out, but I have finally found the problem. The problem has to do with the Coasting Valve/Shutter Valve, which has not been opening and closing properly causing the car to stall while driving and flood out. This part, part #N23813130, is expensive costing over $200. The coasting valve will have to be replaced and I'm not sure of what the work involved will be. Has anyone else had to replace this part, if so please let me know.

Just bypass it, I'll see if I can find the article on it. Mine was bad when I bought the car and I never replaced it. Its main purpose is to feed fresh air to the back rotor on deceleration to keep it from backfiring. I disconnected mine and havent had a problem since.

You can remove it with no problems but if you wanted to keep it "original" Mazdatrix sells them for just under a $100, like $94 and change. or just take a vac gauge with you to a junk yard and find a good one for a third of the price.



Or you could pay for shipping and I'll send you one of the many I have.



The work involved is to remove two (2) 10mm nuts and a c clip. Shouldn't take you more than a few min. for R&R (with the right tools).

I replaced the old coasting valve today. I wasn't clogged and could still move freely. I still have the carburetor off. So I have not taken the car out for a drive to see if it will still stall out. I will mention that I did drive the car around for a while before the repair and I did not stall. However, there was a strong odor of gas and carbon monoxide in the air surrounding the car.

Going on two weeks since I replaced the coasting valve and I'm happy to say that I have had no stalling problems and my Rx7 is running strong. So I guess now I start focusing on my previous projects again, new wheels, a wide body kit, and a turbo.
