Hi there so I ended up getting an '83 GX with 30000km on a rebuilt engine as my first project car and it is so much fun to drive although there is one issue. Whenever I ease off the gas to downshift there is a squeaking noise coming from the back. This only happens when I'm in gear and prepparing to downshift (not when in neutral or upshifting). Any ideas what you guys think it could be? The friend I test drove the car with thinks it might be a bad u-joint or driveshaft.

Any vibrations?

No vibrations, just this squeaking noise (almost like a chipmunk) and only when letting go of the gas (in gear).

Continual or just once (can you tell if it is coming from something in motion cyclical? Or the movement of the chasis?)

As far as I can tell it's a cyclical type of movement (it's pretty brief as it dissappears as soon as I press the gas pedal) but I'll do some more driving tonight when I get home from work. Do you think it could be a bad diff? I think my first investment will be on a Haynes manual and do some troubleshooting and may be take it for a checkup at a rotary shop (though I bought it so I could do the majority of the work myself). Thanks for the replies btw.

No Problem, but if you plan on doing any work with these cars, get a factory manual (1000x better).



Could be the rear end. The only two things with a drive and driven are the tranny and the rearend. But there are plenty of cyclical moving parts; during your home work (driving) tonight, try various cornering (bearings), various braking (also check pads/ ware hardware), rubbing tires, or even heat shields rubbing on the drive sharft. Tearing apart your rearend should probably be your last resort. Usually the rearend goes bad with a whinning sound (which you usually get all the time). Start with the cheap easy things, than work your way up to the more difficult expensive things.

Hows the clutch ? Is the sound coming from the tranny. Could it be the throwout bearing. I had them go out, and that what they sound like.

Thanks for all the replies, the noise turned out to be due to a bad U-joint so I managed to find a used driveshaft and swaped it in.
