wankel_dreams 10-13-2002 11:31 PM

is the smell inside or outside the car? what does it smell like? Fuel? rotten eggs?

rotaryrascal 10-14-2002 01:41 PM

it's from the outside of the car......it kinda burns your eyes and smell's like gas or exhaust fumes!

Felix Wankel 10-14-2002 01:43 PM

Running rich.

Get a manual and look up mixture adjustment.

j9fd3s 10-14-2002 02:34 PM

it could be the tps too, it kinda runs the somg system. or hell it could be the smog system too

Sounds like my car.My eyes water when my car sits at a idle. :squint: Sounds like it's too rich.At least you can adjust your mixture. My 84 SE engine is carbed and can't be leaned out.Damn big-ass 2 barrel with no cats or emissions left. :smirk:

rotaryrascal 10-14-2002 05:13 PM

but I just pass smog!.....would'nt have it detected if it was running rich?

Could it be an exhaust leak?....my car sounds like a lawn mower at idle, but sounds good when in gear.

It still might be running rich but not terribly rich that you would fail a smog test.Yeah I would check for exhaust leaks tho.Do you have all your cats in it still?

rotaryrascal 10-14-2002 05:39 PM

yeah but, looks like there was one new one put in.

Felix Wankel 10-14-2002 08:03 PM

The Dellorto doesn't have idle mixture scrwes on it?

My Weber does.

It has idle mixture screws but I don't want to play with those. The mixture seems to be good in the higher rpm ranges.I just wanted to lean it out a bit not too much tho.Sometimes it runs rich most days it's fairly good as far as a 13b with nothing left related to emissions goes.

Then you might want to lean your carb out a bit.I remember when I did that on my 12a I noticed a power loss but at least the cops left me alone then.If they were behind me now they would freak. You can really smell it when it's cold.Oh well. With this engine I avoid them at all costs. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

1. The idle mixture screws only affect idle mixture. Hence the name.

2. GSL-SE's don't have carbs.

3. Your 83 is not an SA22C. Its an FB.
