What are you guys running for seats. I am wanting to do aftermarket, as mine are worn out pretty much, and the drivers side seems twisted towards the console. So, when I sit in it, my right shoulder is farther back than the left. I am considering the ones that Pep Boys has on display from time to time. They definitely feel stronger than the factory seats, and MUCH more confortable. I would also lose the twisted seat back.

Can the twist be repaired? And if it is, will it stay or happen again? I'm not exactly small at 6' 1" and 220, so I need a strong seat!! I don't want to spend decent money getting the factory ones repadded and reupholstered

if they're just going to get bent up again. I also cannot afford, nor do I want to afford a set of Recaros or Corbeau's. Call me cheap if you want, but that's a bunch of money. Yes they're good, just too good for my bank account.,,,,BB

Also, how did you attach your aftermarkets to the seat tracks. Was it pretty easy, or a PITA?

You can put turbo II seats in your first gen. I think you just need to bolt your stock seat sliders on, and oval out a hole or two to do so. You might even be able to find a pair of them on the cheap in a junkyard or something. I plan to do the swap when I get my car in better mechanical shape.

My local Mazda place has a set of I "think" 84-85 seats. They are more squarish, with adjustable headrests. While I am not a big fan of the later seats, these are leather and freshly reupholstered. They could easily be died black to match my interior. I prefer the thinner high headrest early models, or more modern sports seats like they sell now. I am planning a pick a part trip, maybe tomorrow morning. I might get lucky, and find a set of seats. I found a rust free moonroof a few years ago, and that was the last time I went looking for RX stuff. If I can find some RX7's, I may grab a few extra parts while looking for seats. I can only dream of finding one with a header exhaust;-).....BB

I never figured out why, but people around here throw the NASTIEST, HEAVIEST parts onto seats in the junkyard. Sometimes greasy old V8 heads, other times a

muddy wheel and tire. I have no idea why they do it, they just do?? I wish I could see someone in the act, and beat them with a hatch strut.

I use a sparco "speed" seat and I really like it. I use a lumbar support for my back from sparco and it is very comfortable. Looks good to.[attachment=38161:attachment]

I like the design, but all of the newer seats seem to go the car show sport tuner look with the huge bright logo's.

Maybe that panel could be covered with a piece of leather, and look a little less obvious. Hmmmm. Does it recline?,,,,BB

no reclining for this seat, and the seats are cloth so you could cover it up pretty easily.

One320B 05-15-2006 12:00 PM

That's the same seat I have for my '84. You can actually make the stock seat sliders work w/ the sprint or speed from sparco. Sprint and Speed models are the same, minus one is FIA homologated and costs $80 more,lol... stock bolts fit the thread pattern on the sparco too, which was nice...

It's not flashy to have the sparco there as long as its a real sparco, some ricers in town got sparco put on cheap ass seats!

Go with something that feels good to you though, every seat is different for every driver, especially aftermarket!

And no, the sprint nor speed from Sparco recline...reclining seats are WAY more expensive and not worth it from the racing/performance point of view...

So will a stock 87 seat fit, I mean without hitting the console or doors? On my search today I found three RX7's in the same junkyard, ALL of them the same color?!?! Two 87's and one 88. The first 87 I found was the only one that had decent seats still in it. If they fit I may grab them. They're $50, pretty good foam, no huge heavy junk sitting in them, and no rips. Sorry, but recline is a MUST for me. I have NEVER sat in a non reclining seat that had enough leanback for me, ESPECIALLY in a small car. To be comfortable in the 87, the seats were leaned back and slid back until they touched the rear shelf/deck. No way would I be comfy in a non moving seat.,,,,BB

One320B 05-15-2006 09:49 PM

I can see that if your a taller/larger guy.. but you wont find a race seat w/ "leanback" since that would defeat the purpose. I cant say that the FC seats fit..i just know the sparcos do.

Buzzbomb 05-15-2006 09:58 PM

I guess I am looking for the sport look, but with reclining ability. Most of the more reasonably priced seats I have seen do this. I am more inclined to go for the 87 seats now. Thanks for the help guys. They will look amazing done up in black with silver centers.,,,,BB

My car is mostly street driven and I can understand where you are coming from. Sometimes you need to move around a little.

willie jspec 05-24-2006 05:06 PM

I have a set of 93 seats. I had my boy fab up some flanges. and they work and fit great. he only charged me $10 but i knew the kid forever, although I cant imagine that they'd be to much more expensive elswhere. I like you, need to be able to layback. I almost live in my car so i need all the comfort i can get out of my tiny cockpit. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

j9fd3s 05-24-2006 09:24 PM

i had a recaro spd in mine, i loved it, comfy too!

on a side note, ive got a bunch of good seats that need reupolstering, mostly 84-85 leather ones, but i think i have good set of cloth seats, if anyone wants em....

z-beater 05-25-2006 11:00 AM

Got any old school recaro's? Like the ones they used to put in trans-ams https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png I knew that I had to bastardize my car some way...

Buzzbomb 05-30-2006 03:22 PM

Well, I went and got tthe 87 seats from the junkyard. Imagine my surprise when I dropped

the passengers side in, every single hole lined up, and it had about the same clearance

on the sides!! Yeehaw!! MUCH better side bolsters, on the tops anyway. Too bad they're blue, though.

Going to reupholster them as soon as I find a decent price for decent work. Best of all they're not

twisted up like a pretzel, like the old ones.,,,,BB

Buzzbomb 05-30-2006 03:30 PM

Also forgot to add that my seat tracks on the original seats are just about toast.

BIG time rust flakes where they lay on the carpet on the front passenger left side.

I bet I could break them with a set of good pliers. SCARY!! The newer tracks don't have a speck on them. ,,,,BB

Excellent quality, made in Oklahoma, and priced pretty reasonably. If I liked leather on my seats I'd buy a set.

Buzzbomb 06-03-2006 10:00 PM

Here's the comparison. MUCH better in my book. I should be getting them redone in the next week or two. Yeah leather is pretty mice, but fabric is cooler especially in black. Here in Houston just sitting down on leather or vinyl can burn you if you're wearing shorts. Also leather isn't in the budget right now unfortunately. Here's the

passengers side installed compared to the drivers. Can't wait to make them match the interior. Going to do nice vinyl side bolsters, with a silver cloth in the center. The seat back will be cloth only up to the midway point, with the headrest more like the original. Eventually I will do the door panels in a matching fabric. Factory seats and door panels didn't match, which is odd even for the early 80's?,,,,BB

FIBREMAZ 06-04-2006 02:25 AM

I have Sparco reclinables in my 7. Nice seats that fit very well in 7's are the early Miata seats. They are very comfortable and reasonably cheap.

Buzzbomb 06-04-2006 09:07 AM

This is about what I want to do with it. Black vinyl on the side bolsters, black cloth on the headrest area, and silver cloth in the middle section.,,,,BB
