I just got an 84 (known as a series 3 over here in aus) and I wanna get all the bodywork done before I put in the 20B... :smirk: I've found a sh*tload of rust all around the back window, where the previous owner (read: no idea... :squint: ) just wacked a di*kload of silicone sealant around it to stop it leaking into the back. I've got rust in my sun-roof and around the wipers at the front (I can fix one of those by getting a new little middle panel).

There is'nt any in the floor (thank god) or on the inside where the door rests, but a little in the doors and bonnet.

So anyway, what I'm asking for is some advice on where to look for the most common rust spots and an idea of how much to expect to pay (US$ or AUS$) to get it all out and fixed. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

Sounds like quite a project you have there.20B first gen?Damn someone has some money to throw around.I wish I had the green to drop that engine in.Nice 7 in your avatar.Do you know where that kit is from????Good luck on fixing the rust.I have a few little spots myself that I need to fill with a MIG welder.Let us know how your 7 is coming from time to time. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

That pic in my avatar is from my other favourite web site iluvmyrx7. I've seen your rx7 on your website, nice :bigthumg:

Both my friend and I have both bought 7's for projects, mines for street, his for track. His dad used to race them, thats how we got the bug. He's dad once took his race 7 up to 20G on the tacho. (just cos he could...the smart-arse) https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

I've been offered ported 13B's and turboed 13B's from other friends with rx-2's 3's and 7's, but I'm after something a bit different and more original. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bling.gif There isn't too many nice 7's cruising Perth, West Australia.

I'm looking at getting a 20B half-cut from a cosmo with factory twin turbo's, etc, I've got some priced at about AUS$2500 for the half-cut or I can take the other road and pay about AUS$5000 to have one built for me locally. Then I will mate it to a 5-speed supra gearbox and put in a 4.1 LSD or I might need a 9-inch. I really want to be able to drift the f**k out of it, its not for drags.

I'm always open to suggestions for anything though. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Yeah,I'll fix mine in spring when I go to mount the front airdam on it.I need to order the racing beat springs still for it. :bigthumg:

im not shure if its a problem in all of them but my 84 has a small hole in the rear pass fenderwell other than that just some around the front, which will be replaced with the mariah motorsports front end(soon I hope) :bigok:

Mine is a little hole just above that hook on the rear passenger side.I need to replace this POS bumper cover and fender so I can put the lower front kit on it.I can't wait to see how it changes the look.Next project I'll go full kit and possibly a hood scoop. This one stands out enough with the monster wing I have on it.

drifter 12-22-2002 08:49 PM

As soon as I can find a shed big enough, I'm just gonna strip the whole thing panel by panel and replace what I can(find), or get it cut out and bogged/welded. Theres just little of surface rust here and there and a shitload around the boot. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

But not enough rust to make me give up the project. :wiggle:

Thats the spirit just think of how nice it will be when its done.I always do.

Heres a site with something for you to consider.Bills rusty 7 resto page! Enjoy.I did.

drifter 12-26-2002 08:49 PM

Cheers man, that is a mint web site. Gives me some inspiration. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Racer X 12-26-2002 10:55 PM

Thought you might like it.Its got me thinking of buying another FB with alot of rust in the rear quarter panels so I can get it for next to nothing then buy a wrecker body like that guy did.

drifter 01-07-2003 09:34 PM

So I ended up finding a place for my project and day by day I've been completely stripping the exterior and interior and as of this morning, this is the main rust I've got. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

Holy **** thats alot of rust.I see you have the SE brakes on it.I love 4x114 pattern wheel options. You might want to consider what that guy did on that website I posted in here and find a FB that go in a front end collision.Poor car. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

drifter 01-07-2003 10:03 PM

Yeah, that would probably be a good option. They're pretty hard to find though (bit like trying to find rocking-horse **** https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub... ). I'll try and cut most of it out myself, its going to be a mission. Mig welding and bog.

Racer X 01-07-2003 10:05 PM

I hope it turns out good. They are fun little cars to drive.

Hereonout 01-08-2003 02:30 AM

love the idea of the subs in the storage boxes, always wanted to do that, just a little differently.

j9fd3s 01-08-2003 10:52 AM

your rust isnt that bad, the rear panel is cheap new, and i'm sure you can find a sunroof section in a junkyard. hmm your car is a lot different from our (usa) 84-85's. our cars get no headlight washers at all, they usually come with a 12a carby, and the s2 breaks and wheels, unless you get the gsl-se which has the 6 port 13b and the same suspension and wheels you have

Intresting, any rust on the inside of the rear wheel arches? Look like you have a lot of body work ahead of you. Have fun.

Racer X 01-08-2003 10:08 PM

My 83 will get torn down and checked for rust this summer but it looks clean.I know there is some classic storage bin rust but I can fix it with the old mig welder.I need to wait till the end of the month before I see what I will do.I might end up with a 89 GXL as well that needs a motor in it.Make a nice daily driver if I live the AC and **** in it.IF being the key.

There is a little bit in the wheel arches, but not too much to stress about. I'm more worried about all the rust I found today in the firewall.

Where the aircon bolts on at the top is bad.

So much for the guy who sold it to me telling me on the phone there was only a 50cent size piece at the back. :squint: Oh well, at least I made him knock off $600 when I saw the rust. :smirk:

j9fd3s 01-09-2003 10:50 AM

hmmm thats not fun right there

mike

Racer X 01-09-2003 11:08 PM
