Hello all! I have an '82 RX-7, and it has issues. It runs choppy from the start, but it runs. The idle is rough, but once the pedal goes down, it smooths out. The other thing (I don't know if they are connected) is that when it has been running for around five minutes, the engine suddenly starts running very hard, loses acceleration, and will stall when stopped. Any ideas about what could be wrong? Thanks in advance!

possibly a apex seal spring. If one is broken, the idle will be rough and smooth out at higher rpm. Or you could just have a vaccum leak.....

Hey Rtrumpet, wooffinn here, hey rohlfr that sounds like your in the right area, I just hope not for rtrumpets sake!What kind of carb do you run? TheMazda item?I've found a couple of problems over here that may help. First things first though, How's the fuel filter? Just I had a similar prob on my '79 Rx-7 and a larger aftermarket filter fixed it.

I'not sure on how different our carbs are but I've found here that the decelaration or coasting valves can cause similar symtoms to yours. It usually just old age of rubber that causes it. Another sensor on the carb is the fuel cut solenoid. This little bastard has caused me to pull the hair out on the odd occasion!

Unfortunately without knowing what they are will probably confuse you[sorry about that!] so if you have a local mechanic, just check with him.

The solenoid needs a good earth, so just make sure the battery terminals are tight.It could be a apex prob too, but just have a look round first just to make sure nothing has come off. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Thanks for all the speedy replies, guys. I hope it has nothing to do with the engine AT ALL. I had the original engine go bad, and gave it to a local shop. They had the car for seven months, and then they gave it to another shop to work on. He got it running and said that he thought there was something wrong with the carb, but I was too broke to fix it then. The carb is stock, as are most parts in the car. So I may look in to that. The coasting valve and the fuel cut solenoid I had not even thought of. So I'll check that. Thanks again.

Thanks Donna! It helps to have a visual of what I should be looking for. I'm gonna try those this afternoon. Here is another question for the forum, while I am racking your brains. I never really took notice to this before, but I have a parts-buying situation on my hands. This car was wrecked at some point before I got it. Anyway, the front end is from an 82, and the title reads it as an 85. What do I go with? Or do I just pick one and try it. Is there something in the engine compartment I can look for? Or is the difference between the two models minimal enough that I can mix and match parts easily? Sorry for the length of this post, guys!

Well I would probably go with whats on the title, since that is probably more accurate. You could always put an aftermarket nose on there to dress it up a bit.
