I've got a 1984 RX7-GS which sits in our garage except for the summer months. A couple of years ago when attempting to startup for the summer, it would not start - and I determined after some basics diags that the fuel pump was bad.

I just replaced the fuel pump. But now, on startup the car kicks out serious white smoke and has a very rough idle, and only stays on if I keep my foot on the gas. The whole time the engine is running its really rough, and as soon as I let go of the gas it stalls.

Can anyone direct me as to what basic checks I should try, and what if anything I should replace, given the car sits idle most of the time.

Thanks!

Probably have some clogged jets. May also need to clean the plugs. Perhaps try using some sea foam in the fuel, that may help clean some of the varnish out.

i have actually been told if the car is going to be stored aviation fuel is better, because it has stabilizers in it.

anyways, white smoke could be a few things, these cars have 2 o rings that seal a coolant passage between the block and the intake. these o rings fail when they get old, and you get weird vacuum leaks, and it could actually be sucking coolant in the intake. very easy to check. open the hood, and if you look at the seam where the intake manifold meets the engine, it should be dry. if there is a green puddle there, it needs the intake gasket and orings.

it could also be a carburator problem, in my experience these just dont go bad, ive rebuilt a bunch and not had em fix anything. although they are old enough where they are starting to leak externally

I tried Sea Foam by adding ~1/2 can to oil, and the rest to a 3/4 full gas tank. Started up immediately with a smooth idle, but again, lots of white smoke for a few minutes. This subsided afer 5 minutes, and idle/exhaust appeared normal.

I'll drive it for ~5-10 miles before replacing oil.

Thanks much for the help!!!

Is there a way to replace the gasket and o rings without doing a full rebuild?
