I am swapping out the instrument cluster on my car. One of the first steps per my shop manual is to remove the steering wheel. The manual calls out to use a steering wheel puller to remove the wheel. Is there another method I can use as I do not have a steering wheel puller.

most of the time, yes.

1. clean hands

2. open drivers door

3. pop off the horn cap

4. using aforementioned 21mm wrench remove nut

5. thread nut on 1-2 turns, so the steering wheel doesnt hit you in the face when it pops off

6. gently pull the steering wheel side to side

7. if this doesnt work, tap it side to side

8. if this doesnt work, hit it harder, the streeing column is collapseable, and theres a little plastic pin that we dont want to break, so we dont want to hit it too hard.

9. if this still isnt working, you might need a puller.... you can usually rent em

when you put it back together a little grease on the splines will make this easier. also make sure you line up the turn signal pins with the holes in the wheel

I was able to take the insturment cluster out of my car without removing the steering wheel. Just took a little manuvering. I have a 84 GSL-SE.
