Hey guys, I'm in the mood to remove my air conditioning from my 84, due to fact that I have windows and a sunroof and that it doesn't really work properly anyway. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png (I think it needs re-gassing, but because it was pre-91, I'd have to spend $$$wads to get it all upgraded to the new gas they use now).

So anyway, it looks reasonably straight forward, but before I begin removing things I'd thought I'd open it up to some discussion on the floor and see if anyone has tried it before and had problems, or if anyone has any helpful tips or tricks for me. :bigthumg:

Thanks in advance. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif

I did that to mine, there's quite alot to it, condenser, lines, compressor, and tons of other fun things to remove if you want to do it right just carefully start removing items, but plug the lines asap in case you ever wanted to put it back. there is also a thing under the passenger side dash, get the blower piping out of a rx7 without a/c from the factory to replace that stupid heavy thing. If I remember right if you remove the cover in front of the radiator you can get to the condenser, good luck; hope this made sence

yah basically just start ripping, the ac bracket wieghs like 50lbs, its good wiegh savings. the non ac duct under the dash is still available new (lhd), or you can take the evaporator and gut it, or leave it alone. when you take everything out put plastic over the end of everything you leave in the car, in case you wanna put the ac back in someday

Cheers for the advice guys. :bigthumg:

I haven't had air con in any car I've ever driven, so I won't miss it much. I'm just glad that we don't have the rats nest to bother with in our cars over here in Aus. Our emmision laws aren't so tight. :puke:

this is the 2nd time ive see you say that, but is it not true! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

ive owned 3 aussie delivered 1st gens ( as S1 s2 and currently a S3) and all had basiccly the same rats nest as the US cars!!!. I've got a box full of vacumm hose related emiisions crap that was on my S3.

Maybe some one has already han a fiddle with your car?? :yum:

the a/c stuff is easy as the others have pointed out... just be caful undoing the lines, you might freeze and eyeballs or something, and we dont want that! :bigthumg:

sgieldon 01-01-2003 05:45 AM

Yeah;

Speaking of discharging!

I learn't the hard way. I thought that mine was dead. When I disconnected the lines I got sprayed pretty good in the face and hands. Took me 3 days to overcome that stupid move.

Wear Eye Protection and a Long Sleeve Shirt before you screw with this project. If anybody has a 82 or later there is 2 release valves on the Air Cond that you need to push the Ball in. That will release most of the pressure. Just another day at the office!!!

What's the deal with removing the under dash thingie??? I just capped off the nozzle coming out of the firewall and was not aware of any changes to anything that would matter.

well you can just leave it there.

but its dead weight if the rest of the a/c aint hooked up..

sgieldon 01-01-2003 06:51 AM

Good Morning;

Well I see that I'm not the only Rotor Head awake this AM.

Thanks for the answer.

I kinda new this one! But the weight factor is no biggie for me.

Have a Great One.

Really? We do have rats nests? And I thought I was having a nice gloat. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Oh well, It wouldn'y suprise me if someone has had a fiddle with the engine, its not that easy to find out the exact history of a 19 year old car. Now that I think about it, I've posted it more than twice. ummm, hehe.

Well anyway, I officiallly stand corrected. :bigthumg:

I got all of the air conditioner parts out off my engine, and in the process found that my radiator is in not too good a condition, but anyway, I wont be putting in back in (not now anyway, oops did I cut that hose), so what I was wondering is what the deal is with the passenger side thingy. Can you just remove the whole thing? Or is it better to remove its insides and leave the rest??

Thanks

j9fd3s 01-03-2003 12:52 PM

you have to have something there, because the ac is in between the blower and the heater. you can do three things

1. leave it alone

2. gut it

3. buy bypass tube for a non ac car

mike

drifter 01-03-2003 01:02 PM

Hmm, might do number 1 for now, and 3 later.

Thanks. :bigthumg:

j9fd3s 01-03-2003 01:15 PM

yah that sounds good!

drifter 01-09-2003 08:45 AM

Now I see exactly what you mean about the air con being between the heater and blower. I had fun dripping coolant all over my carpet when I removed the blower too. :squint:

http://home.iprimus.com.au/alines/rx...owerremove.jpg

My car is now just bare metal. :smirk:

drifter 01-09-2003 08:52 AM

Oh, btw, can you see the size of the rust hole where the aircon was bolted on near the top of the dash. Arrrghh. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/violin.gif

j9fd3s 01-09-2003 11:00 AM

yeah the inside rust is not good. hey btw what does an s3 go for over there?

mike

drifter 01-09-2003 11:13 PM

hmm, I paid AUS$2200 for this one, but that is really good, the cheapest I've seen is $2000 but it was damaged and unliscensed. Usually about AUS$3500 - $5000 depending on transmission and body condition. (Manuals are more expensive)

 That much.I paid 800 cdn for mine. But I lucked out too. :squint:

drifter 01-09-2003 11:27 PM

To find a first gen in really good condition is like trying to find rocking horse ****. Its damn near impossible. Theres about 5 to 10 series 1's (79-81) advertised around for sale in the paper every week, but not many later series. A second gen is about AUS$8000 for a crappy one. There also pretty rare.

j9fd3s 01-09-2003 11:41 PM

one like yours would go for about 1000-1500usd. i paid $350 for my 83 it needs a motor, and paint etc etc. finding good ones here is hard too, they have all been at least repainted, if not wrecked and fixed badly

mike

Racer X 01-09-2003 11:58 PM

Rx's are expensive thats for sure.If I get this FC I need a engine and paint for it so by the time its ready it'll be about 5g's with some polished 17's from my friend who has a set.

j9fd3s 01-10-2003 12:45 AM

cool :bigthumg:

Some people are absolute dreamers!

Theres a guy who advertised an 84 (same as mine exactly), but the ad said it was unlicensed and damaged. He was asking $2000!!!!! I paid $2200 for licensed and no damage!

But the funny part is, today his ad is in the parts section and reads:

Mazda RX7 coupe, 1984, auto hatch, 2dr, 12A

motor, all extras, unlic, suit restoration $1500ono

Bwahahahahaha !!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/moon.gif

Such an uneducated soul. Doesn't coupe mean 2 doors and damaged now means suit restoration after a $500 decrease. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

So anyway, I ring this guy up and I said, will you part it, cos I don't need the whole thing, I've already got most of it already, just need like drivers door and rear bumper, etc.

And he says, NO, he wants to sell it complete.

Maybe if he was selling it for $500 complete, I would understand, but $1500, what a dreamer. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

So anyway, I'll let him sweat another month, (cos theres NO WAY he'll sell it at that price, ever) then ask him again if he'll part it. If not, I'll be nice and offer him $700 or so for it.

But seriously, I've seen worse than that, I once saw an 84 advertised (last year some time) for about $9000, and the advert said it was in original condition. hmmm, Only if you NEVER drove it and had it garaged for the past 19 years would an 84 be worth $9000.

haha https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif haha

Narcisse91 01-10-2003 08:13 AM

Out of curiousity, has anyone thrown all the AC components on a scale to see how much weight they actually removed?

j9fd3s 01-10-2003 11:44 AM

the ac bracket in a 1st gen is iron, it feels like 30+lbs by its self, the condensor is maybe 5-8lbs, compressor is 10+. its enough you can feel it

IN WA all the parts seam cheap. here in Victoria a bone stock S3 sell for 4500-6000 with rego ect..

2000 for that one you discribed is a bargin for s S3 in that condtion.. though the 2nd ad makes it seam suss...

My car is currenttly being reverted back to stock and will be for sale for about 5500 (havent decided yet) and i expect it to sell within one week without hassle!

good cars for that price go quick!

i decided to sell it in parts, then the car stock as i will get a extra 2k for my troubles.

and i had a offer for 10k for it!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png ... but the mods on it have a replacment cost of 10k

and a extra 2k is 2K!!!! :bigok:
