I'm new here and new to RX-7s as well - I got a GSL-SE last weekend, and (as is typical of my luck) on Wednesday it started using coolant pretty bad. So I suppose I'll have to take the engine out, regardless of what I decide to do after that . . . now there's this video I came across by Bruce Turrentine on how to remove/replace the motor on a 2d gen. Would this be any use for me on my first gen, or should I just wing it? thx Jason |

the R&R: Removal and Reinstall and the Overhaul. seen the R&R. Its pretty much straight forward. the 86 and 85 engines are very similar, but not the same. removal is basically the same, the video will give you an idea of what to look for. also, a haynes should be of help. i removed my GSLSE engine about 2 months ago. the only tip i can give you is to first remove the power steering pump bracket, since you need some tension on the pulley to remove the bolt. |
I already ordered the overhaul video, and I have a Haynes manual on order as well.

that should do it. there are 2 ways, to do it.
1. pull upper intake, remove wiring harness, remove radiator, pull engine 2. pull up passenger side carpet, disconnect wiring from ecu, throw wiring on top of intake and pull motor mike |

If you are going to rip the motor apart I suggest you have it ported. Might as well if its going to be apart.

I might . . . but probably not, because a. porting a six-port doesn't help near as much as I'd like b. I'm planning a swap in the not-too-distant future and c. I just want to get it running with minimum expense!
