I want to buy a GSL-SE and a friend is trying to talk me out of it. He said it is a good engine stock, but as soon as a push it hard or put any mods on it, it will breakdown on me. Is this true? Would it be a reliable car if I pushed every once in a while with ignition and exhaust mods only and the every other weekend autocrosses? Would it still remain a reliable commuter?

it will be fine as long as

a. its in good shape now

b. you keep it cool (no over heating)

d. you dont redline too often

c. you keep fluids in it (OIL!!)

which ignition are you planning on doing? which exhaust are you planning on doing?

wtf are you talking about with (d)

beat the crap out of it and it should be fine if the engine is good besides it gets rid of all the carbon

Shane.Trammell 05-17-2005 01:09 PM

i doubt that you have to redline to get rid of all the carbon. i just dont feel comfortable redlining my engine all the time, especially with 222k miles

I think he ment excessively driving the car hard every day. Some people just beat cars bottom line, and theres no need to redline the motor every time you leave a stop light or something. I think that's what shane was trying to say, you'd be suprised what some people think is ok to do on a car.

Agreed on the oil as well, change it every 2,500 with some nice mineral oil. Syntheic is not needed on a 1st gen I don't think. It would just be a waste of money and mineral oil will work perfectly fine even for auto-x and such. Change oil before every auto-X meet if you really want to be safe.

thanks np94, thats exactly what i meant

trianglepower 05-17-2005 01:29 PM

Thanks, that was what I wanted to hear. As for exhaust and ignition I would go with Jacob Energy Coils and Jacob FC1000, Racing Beat wires, and NGK plugs and a full Racing Beat exhaust. If the engine does blow though, I will probably if money is good drop in a Turbo II engine

nopistons94 05-17-2005 01:30 PM

no problem. If you decide not to get it, let me know where it's at so I can buy it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

look in the 1st gen faqs and do some research on the dlidfis before settling on that ignition. some like this setup better

the old motor in my car went 140k with exhaust mods, it was making enough power that the fuel system was maxed out. the last 20k of the engines life it saw 10k rpms, many track days, and was just generally had the crap beaten out of it everyday. if it had a more fuel, and i kept the tach under 10k, it would still be running
