ok i recently bought a 1985 12A and it runs...but not as well as it should. i just recently took it to the ONLY RX7 mechanice in my area (that i trusted) for a general inspection and here is what he told me:

Multi oil leaks, IE oil cooler frt crank seal, rear crank seal, injector pump, and oil pan drain bolt. fuel leak at carb, starter problem, blows fuses, wiring in poor repair, rear end leaks, cold start system non functioning, (and my fav.) low comprestion on rear rotor....

the fact that i need a new engine is obvious to me but i had hoped that you guys could give me your input on what my next move should be, should i just get rid of the car and look for another one or is there hope for my baby?

**** can the cold start, you can rebuild the OMP(if thats what you are talkin about when you say "injector pump), oil pan drain bolt is an easy fix.

Look at the carb and see where its leakin at. Starter can be replaced. More than half of the wiring underneath the hood on a 1st gen 7 is emissions related and you can **** can that too.

As far as the low compression, that could be due to the OMP not working or you could have carbon build up and sticky seals. Do a search on running Pre-mix like a 2 stroke would. Run some Marvel Mystery oil down the throat of the carb and turn the motor over a few times, let it sit for a few hours. Start it back up, warm it up to operating temp and go run the **** out of it for a little bit to blow the loose carbon out.

You sound like you are ready for an overhaul anyway ya look at it, that was just a few suggestions to get ya by for awhile.

Good luck.

Actually the Japanese 12A was turbocharged.

inuissus_cendi 07-20-2005 03:46 PM

actually only some of the j-spec 12a's were turbo'ed. it was an option they added in the later years only in japan (thanks mazda...) thats why the 2nd gen turbo is called the Turbo II, cause it was the 2nd turbo'ed RX7.

(i guess that numbering system fell off with the 3rd gen...)
