....and by axe, I mean completely do away with. The wiring in this car is an absolute mess. An absolute mess. I want to rewire the entire car. All the emissions stuff is removed, and I'd really like to get rid of all those color-coded rat's nest connectors, i.e. I'd really like to get rid of the ECU entirely and just hardwire all the remaining stuff like lights, dash, fuel pump, etc. Is this possible? What has to be done to make it happen?



Since the car's carbed, I'm thinking it won't be a big problem. I'm also figuring the ignition system is also controlled by the ECU, and in addition to figuring that, I'm surmising that it's possible to have some sort of separate aftermarket ignition control system (like MSD something or other). How would you go about setting up and ignition system like that (what parts needed, how to hook them up, etc.)?



Is there anything else that is controlled by the ECU, especially anything elses that would go all crazy-haywire on me without the ECU?

This is using the stock carb, btw... with emissions removed.

it can be done, just be prepared for alot of work and wiring diagrams. I did something similar in my FC, it basically involved unwrapping all the harnesses, and picking out all the wires I no longer use. Just keeping the headlight/turnsignal/brake light type stuff. Then I made a seperate harness for the engine related wiring (my car is still EFI, but with a haltech).



the harnesses are half the diameter they used to be, and there are no more random connectors dangling all over the place. I'm quite happy with it.

i did the same thing witht the harnes, but i just cut the wires that did not go to somthing, like i have the alt. wires temp switch, and oil and water temp, all the syliniods i just cut at the fire wall the ecu doesent mind it at all,
