I'm trying to get a stock 84 12A to pass CA smog test. The result paper said that it failed in the HC section, I think that's (Hydrocarbons). It failed by like a 150 points. Where should I start to make it smogable? Does that sound like the cat or Ignition? Oh yeah the guy I bought it from said he already replaced the cap, rotors, spark plugs, and wires. Any Advice appreciated

did it fail at idle? 150ppm isnt a lot, you might be able to play with the idle mixture, and get it really hot and it'll pass

Well, I looked at the paper again and it failed at 15 mph by a 100 points, and at 25 mph by 18 points. So your saying to lean out the air fuel mixture? would it be safe to drive it to the smog place running lean?

i didnt say lean, most of the time you need to richen it up a tad. you are only playing with the idle mixture, you cant do any harm with that

Where do you live?

If it's kinda close like that I usually re-run the test immediately. That removes

the doubt of whether or not the car and catalyst are up to operating temperature.

I worked for a buy here pay here car dealership and if we didn't have a car pass emissions inspection ... we would have 4-5 gallons of gas in it and add a gal of denatured alcohol .. never had one fail the second time.. try it prolly will work for you too
