Did the 78/79s come with this set up? And can someone show me a pic of it?Its $10.s so I need to go back and get it before its gone.. |

Bought mine at a junk yard for 15 bucks. 1st Gens 79 through 82 had the air/oil coolers. If you are considering swapping this in, make sure to grab the oil filter tower too. Here's a pic of mine:
|
**** ...Its looks the same ..BUT im not sure about the brackets on the end...
Its looks the same shape..and posobilly size...I know I need the filter mount..BUT the oil cooler lines mount where on the housings?Where the steel line is on the drivers side of the first housing? Is that the line? |
i got my new oil cooler off ebay for like 50 dollars or some ****
|
The early radiators were shorter to compensate for those oil coolers, so you'd either need an old radiator or make some brackets to put it in a different spot.
I put an FC one on my car. |
Felix Wankel is correct.... I solved the problem by purchasing an aftermarket 79-82 radiator from www.radiators.com so that my junkyard oil cooler would mount right up to it in the stock configuration. I also purchased new braided SS oil lines from Mazdatrix. The whole stetup fine and it worked out just perfectly.

are these plastic ones?Im looking for aluminum ones..preferable 3 row.. It dont matter about the lines im gonan get them made locally..I just recently got a hook up with this shop who does custom hoses..and after telling them about my project..they said they do alot of car lines..and they will give me the best price around and fast service..they made my SS clutch hose in 3 mins and charged my $20. out the door.. Napa was like $15. and a 3 day wait..and the hose was all rubber.. Next will be my front brake hoses for the GSLSE ft set up I got.. |

I'd keep the tall radiator and just fab some brackets. I made mine out of flatbar in like 5 minutes.
Let the whoring begin. |

Damn free digicams suck.

The Mazdatrix oil lines I overpaid for came in handy. Oh well, at least that makes my Mazdatrix tag frame not so ricey.

If you're good at fabricating parts and have all the tools and materials handy then put the oil cooler where ever you want. I opted for the smaller radiator because it was a bolt-together job and I didn't hafta fabricate anything. Years ago I was an engineer for a machine fabrication company.... too bad I lost contact with them 'cause I could use some Bridgeport work nowadays. Anyway... if you're concerned about your IC, oil/cooler and radiator fighting for air, I'd recommend going with how I did it. It'll also save you some space for the IC in front of the radiator. OBTW, the radiator I got from www.radiators.com is a real nice unit. No plastic.
|
You got pics of your rad?how much was it ..and was it aluminum like they advertise in the magazines?
|
Mine hangs down under the radiator, but it is also behind it at the same time. The oil lines I had are for an FC, and were expensive as ****, so I wanted to use them.
There is a fuckload of room for a FMIC. |
Ok tight..I been looking at this FMIC off of a Volvo Turbo 740...
and yes I got the tools to make brakets etc.. Snapon die grinder... Ryobi Cordless 12v drill..**** I wouldnt need much else... This is why for 1 reason I dont want to get back into mechanics..cause my tools are here..and easy acces |
BTW Felix Wankel,
Did you remove the paint and polish that one out? Cause the oil cooler I saw is black..At this point its an oil cooler..and I can get the lines made...and was plan on getting them made...So it will fit.. Im getting off this water cooled oil cooler under the filter and going air cooled.. |
Aftermarket oil coolers tend to be raw aluminum, no black paint. I got one for my GSL-SE (cheaper than Mazda part, exactly the same and a perfect fit)

They are Mazdatrix lines that were on a GXL parts car I had.

FC oil coolers use banjo fittings instead of the line itself screwing into the cooler. |
